sleddingfarmer,

The Bob we are speaking of is the one with the gray hair and his wife rides an XP. I can't tell you how disappointed I was when I heard the news. I think the lodge is a great place to stay, but Bob made the trips that we have had. He knows the backcountry in a way that I wonder how it is humanly possible. He has a great sense of humor and never lets you down. My buddies and I are constantly quoting him after out trips. Classics like "reverse is for the parking lot", "it's an Arctic Cat, it bleeds green", "riding with them is like herding chickens" and so on. He is one of a kind.

On our last trip out there in January, I asked him if there was anyone else who knew the back country like him. His reply was that there were only three of them. Bob ( now fired ), Jerry Bell ( retired ) and another man who I have not met but no longer works at the lodge. ( not Carter )

The fact that none of the other young bucks that guide out there have any idea how to get around to the "good areas" is going to mean a lot of lost business for the lodge. They have a very good set up but there seems to be some stuff going on that doesn't make sense to me. There have been a lot of complaints about poor service and crabby employees. They have fired their senior guide who took the time to find all of those meadows, bowls and untouched riding areas. How are they going to fix this? Maybe I'm naive, but these things sound like a recipe for disaster. I just sit here and wonder how they can't see the opportunity they have to provide us sledders with a chance in a lifetime experience. Yet they make bad decision after bad decision. That adds up to a lot of lost revenue on my book.

I asked Bob if I could write a letter to the lodge expressing my disappointment, but he said not to. I wish I could do something, but I will respect his wishes.

As I stated in an earlier post, I will not return to TML if he is not our guide. He is JUST THAT GOOD!!!

2 Years ago Tog Fired Our Favorite Guide, Matt Binon, and we were very upset, but Matt still came and rode with us. We will be in Tog in 2 weeks, but Matt will not be riding, as he broke his Ankle Qualifying for the Winter X-Games in Jan. Now no Carter, and Bob, seems all the Good Guides are gone.

You guys should try Books lake lodge, Joe Hutchinson is the premier back country guide in the area. He grew up in Dubois and worked at Tog or Brooks for the last 7 years. They were both under same ownership till this year. The service at Brooks is way beyond anything you will experience at Tog.

from what I just heard Carter is back???might be a rumor!!

The way I understood it was that Carter was working on an as needed basis. He was guiding a couple of the days when I was there in January. I know that John Dee from johndee.com is there this week and he has ridden with Carter the past few years.

I wouldn't mind trying Brooks Lake Lodge. The one thing that I didn't like about that was not being able to drive the rig to the lodge. Is it a big deal to park by the highway and bring all of your stuff in on the sleds?

Then again, I'll probably wait to see where Bob finds new employment because he would be the number one reason in my decision making process.

No Change

Carter is still guiding part time. Bob did get let go for issues other than guiding. Matt did not get fired but left over a disagreement.

Corporate change nothing but adding money and structure. The same managers are still here working on making Togwotee better. We still have some other great guides who have hundreds of days guiding back country groups!

Employees have many aspects to their jobs and lives at Togwotee that guests do not see as in most jobs!

Bob and Matt are missed by many.

Ben

How is the snow out there? We have another trip planned for later this month.

I have been riding at Togwotee Lodge twice a year for the last 7 years. Rode with Bob 1 time. I believe he knows the mountian well and is nice when you are with him but I think its all a show. He is rud if you ride with someone else.I have ridden with Carter for years and he has shown us a great time every trip.In Jan I rode with Brent I have known him for several years he also did a great job.[Was unhappy to hear that Matt was not there last year but after hearing why I understand. Im sure that TML had a good reason to fire Bob even if we dont understand why. I am glad to hear Carter is back He called me on my cell to let me know.Talk to you soon Carter/B]

Scmurs- Thanks for the clarification. We sat next to him and his group a couple nights at the redfox and they all seemed to be having a blast and seemed like a nice guy.. Tough break for the guy any way ya slice it.

I am and you will be...carpet work slowed down and I was asked to guide for the season end, and I am...
Carter, we missed you out there this yr...I called and left a message w/my number but never heard back? Heard you had hurt your shoulder?? Hope its healing/healed ok for ya. Maybe will see ya next yr- Young bucks from NY

Is Noah still there? Rode with him a couple years ago, he is a great guide.
He took us to some beauti places
Noah is/was still there. We were actually going to ride w/him but ended up w/Jeff and he was also a great guide. Doesnt know a lot of secret spots yet, but w/time and his ability he'll find them...

rmk,

I'm not sure by your post what Bob did to make you think he was rude. Based on my experiences with Bob, at Togwotee and other events, there was no "show" going on. He seems as genuine as the day is long to me. You are right though, he really knows the Wind River Mountains. I guess that's what happens after 20+ years or riding/exploring/guiding out there.

Noah is/was still there. We were actually going to ride w/him but ended up w/Jeff and he was also a great guide. Doesnt know a lot of secret spots yet, but w/time and his ability he'll find them...

Sleddingfarmer,

"Secret spots"...... Isn't that one of the main reasons that we go with the seasoned guides?? I think those guys keep a lot of that information to themselves. I'll be honest, I have no idea how much the "new guys" know about the really good spots, but I've been out there for the past three years, a week each year, and have never had to worry about seeing the same thing twice ( other that a cute bartender or two ) and never had to be the 2nd one in to a play area with Bob. Some of those drop-ins and climb-outs will make your @#$%! pucker, but isn't that why we do this???

TML fired a great asset to their lodge. Was Bob perfect???? I'm not, I won't judge. I know more than I'll share on the 4m, but holding someone accountable for their actions should be rewarded, not punished. All I know is that he helped make every day that I rode with him burn permanently into my memory.

Off my soapbox now....
