COMPUTER SMOKING

Thefullmonte makes some very valid points. There are problems and there are product problems. When any company has known product problems, unless they are mandated by some reporting agency..FDA, EPA,DOT etc.. they dont have to do anything. Should they..well it depends on how good they are when it comes to 'Corporate Responsibility". Personally if my company had a known product problem it is going to get fixed. With Snowmobile companies there isnt a ton of competition they have to worry about especially when they all at similar. Should they handle the cheap arse electronics..hell yes. If you saw the manufacturing cost of that Vreg you would crap yourself. nothing much for a EE to design old technology Vregs. The problem arrises when companies take the cheapest way out and buy from Chinese vendors that have little quality control. Durability testing..who cares. If the retail is 140 I would bet that part costs Polaris less than 14.00! The Potting compound has too purposes..One: it keeps vibration issues to a minimum..two it hides the 50 cents worth of electronics so you cant repair it for a buck....a cheap way of keeping something simple proprietary. The bad part is that the electronics cant cool well..it holds in heat.

As far as Fullmonties dealers seeing problems..good points again. many problems just get fixed and no one knows about it. The forum only shows a small snapshot of reality. why some dealers see more than others..who knows..luck of the draw. The bad "rub" is that when these cheap Voltage regulators fail they take out very expensive components. If there is a Vspike all the alarms and gauges in the world wont stop it. Most people just cant pack a trailer behind them for spare parts.

Now as far as part numbers go...they dont always mean a whole lot. if there is one component on a part that comes from a different supplier the PN will change..it is more for tracking purposes than updated or improved. Heck the new Vregs may just be from a cheaper supplier..who knows?? As far as the inside cover up with diifferent PN stickers goes....Polaris is a pretty big Corporation with deep pockets. Companies this big dont waste productivity hiding part numbers to trick people..it isnt worth their time.

You would have to have a volt gauge, lights, bells & whistles to keep an eye on on your voltage and change out the second voltage spiked.

this statement couldn't be more false. when the VR spikes the gauges will flash and the headlight will dim and then come back on bright and most times the sled will die. after this happens when the sled is restarted or kept running is when the ecu will be fried. at this point you could swap out the VR with out smoking the ECU. i am yet to have a customer tell me he was just out riding and the sled was running perfect never hick up'd once and then boom died and and the ecu was toast had to tow it home.

volt reg

If the volt went high enough for the sled to shut off,the damage to the computer is all ready done.Your home computer is or should be pluged in to a
surge protector, could some thing like this be used on sleds.IMO

The sledding season is to short were i live(northern ont)to have a sled you can not use because of bad parts or bad dealers.I am not brand loyal, i just wish all sleds could run the way should, and these 800 polaris sleds are sh-t.
I traded my 09 800 switch in on a doo 600 bc ren,and so far i am enjoying it.
My son traded his 09 d800 switch in on a snow pro crossfire 800,he just got tired of all the trips to the dealer. Both are sleds had around 1000 miles.

Bought my 2010 600 Switchback 12/29/2010. It has already gone through one VR and has been sitting in the dealers shop for a total of FOUR WEEKS while they and Polaris try to figure out what and why the MFD and lights are still shutting down.
