COMPUTER SMOKING

My best friend rides an 09 dragon. Today ecm started smoking and died. Will restart but smoke starts coming out of ecm. Sled is stock. Any input would help.

Needs updated Voltage Regulator and new ECM. The VR has smoked the ECM.

There is supposed to be a good will campaign for 09 CFI Voltage Regultors. Don't know if they would help cover the ECM.

The voltage regulator just went out taking the ECM with it. I hope your friend still has warranty on the sled as the ECM is spendy. I feel his pain as mine went out last year and I didn't have warranty to cover it. The new voltage regulator are suppose to be updated to keep that from happening. Also if you have a good dealer he may be able to help in the cost of the ECM. If you have any questions there are a lot of people on here that can help you.

As you said bad regulator. Sled under warranty. When he asked why he was not advised of updated regulator dealer said they are being done only on failure. Thats great when we all run these out in remote areas. Guess if you break down and cannot get sled out dealer is off the hook for warranty. Polaris should be ashamed.

Yes they should. This was mentioned often over the past 3years. The fuel mapping the motor failures and the voltage regulator failers can really leave you in a situation. It's good that you think that way though. Come prepared and don't ride alone.

thats how warranty works, its not a RECALL. and although their are stories all over this forum its only a small number of sleds that are effected when looking at total overall sales. i have over 6000 miles on mine w/ no failures, an dover 2500 miles on my stocker with no failures. Out of all the 800's we have sold we have literally only had 4 or 5 come back in the past three years since all of this started happening. the regulator retails for $139, and takes less than 5 minutes to change out. pack one with you if your concerned, swap it out if and when you ever have an issue and then have your dealer reimburse you for your regulator if and when it ever does fail.

I see your point but it is funny the dealer has 4 regulators and four ecm in stock. If retail is 139 and a five minute job save the sledder from having the issue in the back country. At the price tag of these sleds we would expect a solid product period and not have them hide behind if it has not broken yet we will not fix it. I do not ride polaris and my friend has now bought three brand new sleds from this dealer it would have been nice for the company to advise of issue. Same as when you could not run the stock can and had to go get your own. Really that is a bunch of chit. It is like the money is collected and all dealers say Pi** off.

You would have to have a volt gauge, lights, bells & whistles to keep an eye on on your voltage and change out the second voltage spiked.

Are the newest of the voltage regulators any better? I've got 1600 miles on the sled and have no problems spending a $140 if it saves me a ecu and a headache later.

This is what is wrong with Forum's. There have been instances of VR's going out. But an issue that happens 2, 3, or 5 % in the real world, appears to be a 50% happening on the forums. There was enough failures for a good will campaign for 09's that are out of factory warranty. Polaris not recalling them is not unlike what ANY OTHER MANUFACTUER would doo in this type of case.

I believe adding ground straps and a battery (reason I bought an E-Start) is definately the most protection you can give your sled to try and advert a VR issue. A battery will absorb many of the electrical spikes that are given off in what I would call a "dirty electrical system".

Some have went to the additon of adding a fan to the VR as it seems they run a little warm (150'-160'F in my testing). Protecting the ECM thread has alot of info on the VR's and ECM's.

There are way too many things that can go wrong on a sled or rider in the backcountry to get all up in arms about something like this. Yes, multiple day sled retrieval missions can suck but it is the risk we take in the sport we love.

If you're worried about your sleds VR, stay on the trail for the easy way back.

My sled (09 800RMK) started running funny, then ECM started to smoke. Have had it with no problems since I bought it. Took it in to have voltage regulator replaced under bulletin put out Oct 28. $50 deductible, good will coverage on parts taken out by bad Voltage Regulator. So they replaced the ECM, and VR. Got my sled back, and made it 2 miles down the trail and it shut off. Black goo leaking from ECM again. Dropped it off at the dealers...we'll see what happens.

VR

when this happens the first time if you take off the plastic covor for the electrical components and unplug the orange wires and it should stay running and get you out. thats what I did when mine went out in a deep ravine we fried my ECU and went back in the next day with a barrowed ECU and almost fried it before we unplugged the orange wires and rode it out

Interesting...Was this sled E-Start? How did the sled run?

E start ?

no this sled was not an ES we did it just to get it out of the revine and then tow it but it ran flawless so we rode it out.

A little off topic here, but I wanted to comment. Diamonddave makes a very good point, but I'm jumping the fence on this one. I used to work for Bob's Cycle Supply. A very non brand specific store that sells parts and accessories for what we do.

The reason I enjoy the forums is because you get the truth. If someone posts something about their VR going out, well no big deal. If 10 people do then you start to think about it. You weed through the rare failures and identify problems.

The averages are the same. If 50% of the people on Snowest are experiencing issues 50% of the people that never get on the forum are having issues. At least that is what I've seen.

I met numerous people through Bob's that had IQ 800's and never get on the forums. They told me all about their problems. Failed VR's, repeated engine failures, etc... Things that a local dealer told me right to my face that he never heard of??? Really? Liar. Another dealer told my friend, "yeah we have 6 of those apart in the shop right now". Hmm:noidea:

To me a problem is a problem. Why would they be on their 3rd VR part # if there wasn't a problem? The IQ isn't a computer, but it does have one. When a software update comes out you download it for free. If Polaris is experiencing a problem and doesn't know the root cause then they should be updating for free. Part #'s are updated because the part is an update. Again, I'm an idealist and see things through the customers eyes and how I would handle the situation. And I agree that Polaris isn't doing this any differently than any other manufacture. Still doesn't make it right.

I know some of you don't think these kinds of things are really a big deal. And maybe the're not, but when you drive almost 1000 miles just to get to where you want to ride your sled only to have to turn around because your VR failed. Not cool. Not for something that costs like these things do. Oh, the stories I've heard. Some of you can say no big deal because your riding area is close by. Or maybe you can afford to carry spare 140$ parts around. Not everyone can.
Just my thoughts on it guys.

mine went tonight

Out riding my 09 D8 tonight, first ride of the year. Lights flickered, then got real dim, followed by the motor dieing and with no luck restarting.

I assume the VR went-when i saw the lights dim and get bright. Then I assume the ECU went when the motor died.

I have no warranty, I'll let you know if my dealer helps me.
