Coming over to the dark side.

Sold my M7 about a year ago to get out of debt. Now I am out of debt and want to get back in. But entertaining the idea of going with a rev this time. My dad had an 06 800 HO which ran really strong for only being stock. So I'm thinking of looking for an 07 800R. All my ski-doo buddies either have one or want one. Would like to hear every bodies opinions on the R and the HO. Also could use some advice on what to ask and for what to look for when looking at a Ski-doo.

I switched to Ski Doo about 3 years ago. I bought a 2007 Summit 800R first. This sled had a new motor put in just before I got it. I then bought a second sled, a 2008 XP Summit 800R. The 2007 has been towed out the last 3 trips and the 2008 was towed out once last year. All were motor problems. Now both sleds have new motors in them (again), and the 07 is down again. This will be motor number 4 on the 07. The last one made it 420 miles. The 2008 has about 200 miles on it. All problems have been related to the crank. The other problem with Ski Doo's is the clutch. The clutch needs to be rebuilt about every 800 miles. Spring cap bushing goes first and if you dont replace it, you will have to replace the rollers, ramps, arms and maybe the outer clutch half. I'm going out West again this weekend and every trip I just pray it will make it through the week. I have had sleds my whole life and we have all brands in our group, but the Ski Doo's seem to have the most problems. They are great mountan sleds and ride and handle great. I would say they are the funest sleds I have owned, but they do have their problems. I have read that the H.O. motor is better than the R. I realize you can have problems with any of them. I have never had a Cat but we have 4 in our group and they seem to have the least problems.
Anyway...

If your looking for a 07 or an 08 let me know.

Everything T-Dawg said is true 07's definately have had their issues, trust me I have 2 of them. This was the first 800r motor released by ski-doo, albeit powerful, being the first adopter means discovering the issues. Crank problems as I have come to understand, were focused around a case production run, that the tolerances of the crank case being too tight on the inner bearing causing them to cold seize. Rule of thumb is, if you have over 2000 miles on your crank or got a rebuilt motor from skidoo with the R punched by the engine support, you were in the clear. BJ can also line bore the case for about $200 shipped.

The clutches do wear and need maintenance, when replacing the spring cap, you should replace with the 08 version (or the one that comes in the box) as it has the same part number as the 07 (or the one that comes in the bag).

If you are seriously considering the 07, someone will eventually poke you in the eye and say read this... http://www.mxzx-revzone.com/article/2007-summit-xrs-138.asp#clutches

There is a lot of good info on that link that I have found to be true.

On the flip side the XP's have their issues as well, retarded timing curves, knock sensor issues, broken driveshafts, and lets not forget the front end. If you do any mountain riding and loose the sled into a tree, on the rev you may be looking at replacing a $200 nun, on the XP you maybe calling your insurance company and replacing the entire bulkhead and tunnel.

I am on my 3rd tunnel on my sled, however, my wife seems to miss the trees and is still on the original, I just don't think she is trying...:)

dont do it

We just lost the motor in our 07 800R at 1800 easy miles. Took it to a non-factory shop and he said he's seen a hundred 07 revs in for the same thing. They loose a ring pin and the cylinders detonate. New new motor = $2000. I see a common theme in the above posts, don't you?
Buy another M7 or M8.

The '07 Summit is littered with problems, from the case tolerance issues everyone speaks of to coming from the factory with sea-level clutching(some dealers didn't even know about the pin weights). Why one year can be so good ('06) and the next year be so bulletholed ('07) is beyond me. Whenever a good thing undergoes extensive changes you can bet the new generation will have hiccups... That's why the new Polaris' are so good, they had a bad thing (the engine and voltage regulator hiccups), so the new and improved thing (Pro/***) is spectacular! If you're going to jump ship you'd be better off not to swim with the Cats, but go with the PFlo instead.

I'm sorry.My 07 has gone through 2 motors in 12 rides.Now were hearing of 800 e-tecs blowing i'm done with doo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Cat here i come:)
i'm guessing no cat have blowen up this year, look again, they have way more trouble then etecs . Theres probly twice the etects to compare too.
