Colorado Cabin Rental - Ride from door! Suggestions

Everybody calm down, there is good riding everywhere in the great state of Colorado. Whether you stay in a cabin or trailer up your bound to find the goods. If your looking for ride in ride out the Grand Mesa or Grand Lake are probably your best options. Really you should wait and see what kind of year it is panning out to be and make your decision. Cheers

Snowpromod, looks like you are coming from the midwest as I do. With that said, bad conditions or a low snow year in CO still means plenty of fun for us. Ideal or the best of conditions is hard to plan in advance for us. I will say that for the last 5 years I have been traveling to CO multiple times every year and have never come home disappointed. I have stayed and ridden from Thunder Mountain Lodge, even when the Snowesters said it sucked and it's not worth the trip, and had a blast. I also frequently ride Rabbit Ears Pass area by Steamboat and can say the same. TML offers tons of riding areas from the cabin door, you will never be able to explore all of it. Despite the "flat top" and "plateau" descriptions commonly referenced with it, you will have a blast. There are flat, open meadows to tear up with some fresh snow, but there are plenty of hills. Mild to steep, it is all there. Rabbit Ears you will have to travel about 30 minutes to. I didn't like the sound of driving to and from the riding area at first, but once I was there it didn't bother me at all. Much more of a town and nightlife (along with dealers). Good luck with your choice, I don't think you will be disappointed anywhere in CO. After all, we are the ones who live in the real flat lands!

According to the Regional Climate Center the Grand Mesa does not average 400" of snowfall a year. It's only 380.5" :heh:

IMO a bad winter in Colorado in Colorado beats a good winter on the east coast/mid west.(I lived in VT for 8 years before I moved to Colorado)It doesn't rain from mid October till April at my valley home at 9000',can't say the same for lower elevations.
We all have our favorite area's,try not to commit too far in advance and watch the USGS snotel sites.I'm just about positive you'll have a great trip. When you decide on where your going, post again I'm sure some people will show you around.

well said! were not all *** holes here, where ever you ride there is great snow **** its Colorado! I am more then willing to show people around the northwest corner part and ride with new riders,

I'm just hoping that all the rain this summer translates into snow this winter. I know that may not necessarily be the case, but man we are due for a big winter!! I know last season went out with a bang, but I'd prefer it snow good early and keep snowing!

Thunder Mountain Lodge has 800s

Thunder Mountain Lodge rents 800s, 2014 Summit X for $250/day. Both easy powder for beginners or for those that want to cruise off trail and some incredible technical boondocking right out of the parking lot. Average elevation is 10k. Tours and riding clinics are given on demand. Full kitchen if you want to cut your expenses or go 1/2 mile to full bar and restaurant. Thanks

My god would you look at the snow that Powder posted! It's deeper than I've ever seen anywhere!!! That must be the bestest place to ride. :lips::lips: :hippie:

I know!!!

And look at the pic stingray put up of the mesa.... looks JUST LIKE the Midwest, flat and less than a foot of fresh. I am soooo glad you guys love it up there. I always have a good chuckle out riding in the mountains, looking down at the mesa... lol

Thunder Mountain open again? It is closed and open so often it is hard to keep up with.

Grand Lake

Shameless plug for my property in grand lake. Ride from your front door as we are located 1/4 mile from the trail head and On The Trail Rentals if you need to rent sleds. Ride in ride out, ride to town for a beer and hot eats. Cabin just got a facelift this summer! Check it out on VRBO....

bdubs it's not shameless self promotion. It's good to support our fellow S/Westers.:face-icon-small-hap
My wife and I always have a good time in Grand Lake......Ride downtown on your sled for food.Trails are usually well groomed.Look around and there's plenty of off trail opportunity.
Looking for variety, Within an hour or so to.. Rabbit Ears or Vail Pass, Spring Creek,Ute Pass,Corona,Church Park.
Good place for a central location.

It is something to watch you *******s fight over who has the bigger dick when somebody from out of state is trying to get some info about traveling to your state. Buying gas, a trail pass, groceries or food/boos at a bar or restaurant, hotel, all supporting the one thing us on SnoWest have in common - loving to ride a sled. He tries to reach out to a "community" where we are full of helpful insight and gets this? If he never traveled to CO would you blame him!?!?

Like others have said, I don't think you can go wrong in CO. I have been going there for quite a few years and I can't remember an awful time ever. I have seen 3 foot of fresh in Rabbit ears, but I have also been in 4 foot bottomless powder in the Mesa. Every area offers something for everyone. In my opinion it is best to wait and watch where the snow lands before making reservations.

Sounds like you have some sand in your mangina... We like to JOKE about it, much like you tell fishin stories in the Midwest.

I have helped more people on this site come to CO and have a great time than you obviously know about. I have taken countless outsiders to the goods with a big smile on my face. I mentioned that I think it is a mistake to try and do a ride from the cabin type of trip. Getting the BEST out of anything in life requires a little extra effort, that is all I was trying to say.

The Grand Mesa guys always get butthurt because they think their plateau is just the best place ever. I think you can do a lot better, just my opinion, based on riding the area.

I personally abhor tourism, don't need it, wouldn't lose a winks sleep if it died tomorrow. It brings in the morons by the truckload, so don't threaten me with a good time, you can all stay home if that is your attitude.

Now if you want advice, it is in this thread, right there with the clowning around. Don't take any of it personally, it is just the internet.

You forgot about weed, need to buy some of that and drive like an idiot for the real Colorado experience.

Anyways it's summer, so nothing wrong with airing out the Johnson rods while they ain't all shriveled up from the cold.

As far as supporting CO tourism, one needs to be darn careful where and how one spends their money, or else it goes into the hands of those who are ruining the State.
