clutching

so my 05 900 166 just started to make a jangling noise in the driven clutch. I haven't ever torn into one of these before. does anyone know what is making the noise possibly and maybe some suggestions on how to fix it. Also I want to learn about the functionality of clutch weighting and balancing, how to/ how it works/ why it works etc. thanks!

Could be a Broken Spring

But if it was the clutch would not be working very well.

Could be something else causing the Noise.

Pull the plugs wire and rotate the Clutch and look at the weights and spring.



Primary ( engine clutches) take some special tools to work on.

If you are not willing to invest in these tools you should just take it into the local shop.

Read the threads on how to remove it. Investing in a puller is not a bad idea.

Loose jam nut. Look inside the drive spring on top of the spider. Pull the lid off the clutch and spring. Screw it back on as tight as you can get it. This will require a special tool. Reassemble. Actually the correct way is to pull the clutch and put it in a hold fixture and lock the nut down. Torque is like 150 ft lbs and you can't get it that tight on the motor. Find some one with clutch tools or take it to the dealer. What is your location?

Reread his post. He's talking about his secondary (driven) clutch.

I'd say its either a broken spring, like SixtySevenGT said or a broken C-clip.
Take the helix out and inspect the ring and clip. If it needs to be further disassembled, you'll need a Rapid Reaction™ Spring Compression Tool and some C-clip pliers.
