Clutches are back from Indy Dan

Some primarys have completely broken in two at the center. I would hope the balancing would be a cure for this, unless there has been a flaw in the casting process leading to these failures. Mine broke, after i had it balanced, but not by Carl's or Dan. Does anyone know of primaries still breaking even after the professional balancing?

I had mine balanced and refaced by Dan and it still broke in half after 600 miles... I think it's just the original casting. I wouldn't hesitate to have Dan do it again. He does great work, and is a great guy to deal with. Top quality shop IMHO.

What does he charge if you send him new parts? I was going to do the Carls set up, my buddy swears by his sheave mod but I really like the idea of the Team Tied secondary.

The price was $695 for Team Tied, clutch kit, and the balancing of both clutches. He had to replace both bushings in my primary and charged me a little extra. If you send him a brand new clutch then it would be $695.

What type of spindles are those? Are they just composite covers or new ones all together? BTW, that is a good deal on the clutch package.

Those spindles are my Spllt Rail skis. Second sled I've had them on. Amazing skis....never rode any other ski that comes close. They just corner great....no darting...no loss of top speed. But all my riding is on trail here in NH. They do seem to work good in powder the few times I've had the chance to go off trail.

Indy Dan has been resurfacing the sheave for years.... And it's included with his balancing....

Do the sheaves have "multiple angles", a single angle that is different or a different angle when he is done or just a different finish? My clutching was not great on my 12, $695 seems like a deal for what you get.

probably best just to give him a call

I saw $695 and about $hit. Then I read all that's included. That's a smoking good value and all Polaris cranks can benefit from a good balance job.

I checked the weights this morning. 11-66 with what looks like a silver spring. The weights are coated or chromed but I didn't see EPI on them. Not sure what brand they are. Maybe Dan will let us know if he see's this post.

11-66 is an 11 series Polaris weight. It has a more aggressive cam profile compared to a 10 series Polaris weight.

Each sheave has a different angle and the one that doesn't match the belt angle is machined to match the other one (which is the same as the belt angle). Not sure why Poo does that but cutting them to be the same really improves the heat build issue. In fact I did not even bother putting on my Holz vents because my clutches don't get hot after the sheave cut.

Have FUN!

When Dan re-cuts the sheaves, does it allow the belt to go higher up in the primary allowing for a bit of overdrive?

Good info, thanks G MAN.

I'm sending my clutch to Indy Dan this week. Going with the Team Tied setup as well, looking forward to seeing the results.

I did a little comparison between the clutch sheave angles and you were right on track, they are not symmetrical.

Sorry for the rough drawing...

What about the way there are two angles on each face? I wonder if he makes it one angle like other clutches?

I wonder if Polaris does this to compensate for the engine twisting under load? I know that they float the secondary for this reason. I'm also thinking it may have something to do with one sheave being fixed and the other sheave moving?
