Clutch question

Can you remove the heavy steel balance ring on the primary clutch? I was told guys were removing this to get rid of rotational weight but it seems to me it's there for a reason. Won't this destroy the engine if you remove it?

It would be an easy mod if you can do it but I never read about anyone doing it on the forum.

They did eliminate them after a few years. They were supposed to work as a harmonic balancer but in reality they just help absorb fine viberation. It will help your engine rev up faster by removing them but I think you will experience a little faster wear of the clutch bushings. I doubt you will really be able to tell much difference. We have run them both ways and I could not tell any real difference.

My 2010 HCR has one but my 2007 4-post clutch on my M1000 doesn't nor does the 2008 3-post M1000 clutch I have.

These new 2010 800's really rev fast and I would think removing the ring would help that but I'm still not sure if I should do it?

My concern in removing it would be in the electronics of the motor. Does the 2010 have a knock sensor? If so removing this could cause some harmonics in the engine that the sensor would try to compensate for. There was a huge write up on the old forum about this and that removing it caused some issues.

Yeah...I'm leaving that thing on. Sounds like more trouble than it's worth.

Another question. Is the Ti driven spring with the two orange marks on it the same rate as the all orange steel spring? I have one of these that came on my 2007 SP and wanted to use it in my new HCR to loose the rotational weight. The thing is it binds really bad in the Cam area.
