Chewing tobacco?

After some very scary medical events that transpired for me over the past
few weeks my doctor told me to quit chewing NOW! I went to a site recomended to me by Rkymtnman (Kill the can). After reading some of those stories over there, I'm afraid that after 23 years of chewing, I may wig
out and go postal. I sure don't want to put my wife and kids through my
couple weeks of rage. I need some GOOD quit stories here.

You see- I'm already wigging out even thinking about it. I have the shakes right now and I have a dip in as I type.

Good luck with that. It is tough for sure. Worse than smioking or alcohol. I used to do all three.....only still chewing! Hardest habit of all to break imo.

You figure out how to do it let me know. I have quit 10 times in the 15 years, and cant ever quit for good. I think the only way for me to quit is to quit drinking beer also. (that'll never happen) Ill quit for a week or so, then get lit up, gotta have one and start chewin again.

I need to quit chewing also. I have been chewing since 1982. Every time I try to quit, I put on about 15 to 20 pounds and become an irratable SOB. Load up the sled with lots of food, booze, gas and no dip and head for the hills for a couple of weeks of isolation. Take your aggression out on the snow.:D That way even if you eat a lot you shouldn't put on much weight.

Does that nicotine gum work for chewers?

I have quit twice (cold turkey) for 3 and 4 year stretches. Then for some reason I think I can handle casual dipping..................... NOPE!!! Funny thing is I started up a while back and just got busted by my wife last night. She wasn't real happy.

Both times I quit my mind was made up and that is the only reason it worked. If YOU want to quit it will happen, but if you are trying for your wife or some other reason you won't be committed and it will be VERY tough.

Chewing is awesome, its great, really good snuff, long cut-oh yea baby..............................

havent had a chew for bout 11 years now.

peace,

Ya if anyone knows any secrets to quitting let us know!
And yes that booze sure does make you crave it 100times more smokes or chew and quitting drinking is not an option:beer;

my dad chewed for 38 years, he went from a can a day to a can a week to a can every week and a half then went cold turkey. its like alcohol if you just go cold turkey on it, the chances of quitting are about 1:36 it may seem like pretty good odds but they aren't. i have a dip in as i type this ive been chewing for a while(1-2 years) and have no expectation of quitting but people tell me its bad for me, and i retort " what is good for people now-a-days?"

I had a boyfriend that smoked, grossest habit ever...I told him to quit, but he quit for me not for himself...guess what he's smoking. Glad I don't have to deal with it!:D

chewed for about 5 years, my gf hated it so that helped me quit but one night (night shift construction) I was driving to work, about to take a dip and that week I was noticing white bumps (pre-cancerous) and that scarred the hell outa me so I just tossed the can out the window havnt had one since 2 years now and dont plan on starting again. You just gotta quit it cold turkey. Find somthing else like sun flower seeds or chew on a tooth pick or somthing.

Yeah, smoking is gross.......... not that chewing is sexy, but I'm not disturbing anyone else with second hand spit. I checked out Jacks page, nice pics!!!

No need to put the gun in your mouth.

I had a cousin who smoked since a teen. Key word HAD! The family and friends wanted her to quit and she would alway say "well something has to kill me" glibly. Well she was right. Tammy Doty deceased at 43 of a heart attack. Leaving 2 children a husband and many many other.

Rest in Peace Tammy!!

Won't argue smoking is a nasty habit, but so is dipping. Ever kneel down and end up getting that brown on a hand or pants leg?

Drank for quite a few years, last drink was better than 8 years ago and never a regret. That was easy.

Smoked for better than 30 years, just recently quit. Probably the hardest thing to do. Used the patch starting, no cigs. Realized patch was just going to substitute one for the other and quit wearing it. Nearly 4 months now and still not a day goes by I don't crave one, but getting better.

It's scary how that crap runs your life. I've been chewing for about 10yrs. It helped me many a night studying at college. I'm a pharmacist (yes, chewing while studying in college about cancer drugs:confused:) at a hospital that is a tobacco free campus and the decision to chew at work actually out-weighes the possibility of getting busted my admin! That's when you know you're in deep. Heck, I make chemo for cancer patients, and deliver it to the nurse with a chew in my mouth:rolleyes: I see how upset and scared the pt/family is, yet I'm not smart enough to think about it being my wife/son/parents ect... My bro-in-law quit after 20 some years of chewing. He used Chantix. Supposed to really help the cravings. There has been issues with Chantix though. If you are depressed/stressed, Chantix (through an unknown mechanism) can cause suicidal thoughts ect... My dentist dosen't like it (and won't give me a script for it), but the docs I work with said they've put hundreds of people on it and it worked-no problems. Another option for you guys to think about (a little pricey though). Just be sure friends and family know you're going on it and to watch for unusual behavior! I've tried the patches and gum. No go. I'm convinced that it's a mental deal for me. If Copenhagen would produce a nicotine/tabaccoless chew that tasted and smelled like regular long cut, I would never know, and I bet most of you wouldn't know either. When I chew the fake stuff, I know I am and that's why it dosen't work. I promised I'd quit when my son was born...he's 8 months old now.:( I can always find an excuse. The new one is we're moving in May...just to much stress to quit now.
