Chevy 8.1L's- Who's got 'em and what do you think of them?

What added maint. is everyone referring to in regards to the diesel engine and which diesel engine?

I bought a new 09 Chevy 3500HD SRW 4x4 EC/LB w/the Duramax last year and have put 15K on it so far. I currently have all lubricating fluids changed over to Amsoil and installed their by-pass oil filter system. Currently I have almost 13K on the engine oil but I send off samples every 5-7K.
As for winter starting, never had a problem - it has always started.
I have a '97 GMC 2500 4x4 EC/LB and in comparing the two, I will never go back to gas engines in trucks used for hauling trailers around.

wait till something goes wrong with it, its outta warranty, and it costs you $6,000 to fix.

I've got data from a whole fleet of trucks, and the resounding trend is that the diesel trucks cost more than the gas versions do once you factor all costs in.

If the diesels were cheaper, every single truck we have would have one, its that simple.

Thanks for all the responses everyone. I missed out on the truck that I was looking at. I ended up buying a really nice 2008 dodge 1/2 ton crew cab with the hemi engine. It will work fine for everything I do and the wife can drive it too.

You will be happy with that truck.

Diesel's really only start paying for them selves if you carry alot of weight or tow a trailer often.

You gotta pay to play don't ya? It's the same thing as having a old Yamaha 440, & then riding a turbo 800. Do you need that much power? No, but it sure makes sledding allot funner. Did I need a diesel for what I pull? No, but after I drove one, there was no way in hell I was going to buy a gasser again.
You've got to take in to consideration, the fun factor. I'll pay the extra money to drive something I really enjoy driving. I've wanted a diesel for along time, & finally got around to paying the extra $7 grand for one. I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to a gasser now.
Plus, you have to take into consideration the resale value. A gas truck with 200k on it is gonna be worth allot less than a diesel with 200k IMO!
