Dont forget to check if the black and pink wires are correct for the type of fuel you are running. It even calls for it in the instructions of the service tip. Connected for 91/92 Premium fuel. Disconnected for Ethanol or other unknown fuel types.
There were posts last year with good pics of the wires under the black plastic electronics guard above the secondary clutch. I couldnt find the old posts so if anybody has that or good photos please post them as a refresher...thanks,

happy Winnibagos

Connected for non ethanol fuel?

If I remember correctly the wires are supposed to be connected if using non ethanol fuel. Disconnected when using fuel that contains ethanol.

Jim @ DYNOTECH says that the wires account for a 5% difference in fuel flow.

Bringing the wires up to a toggle switch on the console would make sense.

Wires?

I just picked up a 08 D-8 and didnt know a thing about wires, What was wrong with the old style premium key switch like the 01 gen's had. Thanks for the info guy's is there anything else to check for on the D-8?

Do the wires do anything on the 08/D8? my sled has the wires but I didn't think this was programed into the ECU till 09. I could be wrong though, does anyone know for sure?

On the 2008 dragon the wires did not function with the original flash. If you have had any updates done they will be active. As Kraven stated it is a nice idea to add a switch to your dash. The plugging and unplugging of wires always seemed kinda hokey to me.

Mine were plugged when I brought it in for the update, and when I got the sled back, they were unplugged....

I had it wrong..I called the srvice manager that told me this and he went back to his notes and couldnt figure out how we came to that conclusion. Today he told me that they should be connected for 91-92 premium. Disconnect for Ethanol or any unknown fuel type(whatever that means. The notes we must have read that day must have been in a forien language. Maybe I shouldnt have had the Gin/tonics with him before we went over everything. I corrected the orig. post.

Disconnect for premium WITH ethanol as well or does premium take care of the problem either way??

Disconnected if you run anything with ethanol. Connected if you run non-ethanol. I would always run premium fuel.

Perhaps this might help,

Here' my understanding of the "ethanol wires", They lean out the mixture 5%, PERIOD! No ethanol detectors, no timing change just a simple 5% change in fuel flow.

This is different than the "premium" switch on the 2001-2004 Edge's which altered ignition timing.

So if the D-8's were carbureted they would have approx a 500 main jet@ sea level (based on the 500 mains used stock in the 2002 800's)

5% leaner takes you to approx 475 mains.(5% times 500=25. 25 deducted from 500=475)

If you think of it in those terms, you're better informed and now make your own assessment/decision at that time.

Just prior to leaning down your sled 5%, as Dirty Harry would say, "Do you feel Lucky?"

The above is right on, but you could look at it the "other" way. By disconnecting the wires you fatten it up by 5%......

Polaris is not going to give you the chance do anything other than run it "Fat Rich". This allows you to run in a pinch, lower grade/oxygenated fuel by disconnecting the wires.

So if you have suspect fuel disconnect the wires.........

I pesonally dont see any reason to run premium fuel weith the new head, I would be curious to see what polaris recommends. I would guess they would say premium to cover there a$$es, but my opinion is they do not make enough compression to use premium. I would think you would get a better burn with 87 octane rather than 92 octane, unless you run sealevel to about 3000' then I could see running premium. And yes plug in wires for non ethonal and unplug for ethonal fuel.

Octane recommendtion

Polaris recommends the following: (R+M/2) 91 Non-Oxygenated Fuel
