Cast Smartcarb?

It looks like the cast carb is prone to carb ice in the snowbike market. With the cast having glued in slide runners it seems to insulate the slides from transferring heat. Also with the smaller mass of the cast the ktm heaters had to be shortened and we lost heating ability with that also. I am trying two hot grip heaters on my gasser but am going to pony up for the billet and hope two ktm heaters will be enough. I know between Corey and Randy there will be a fix, just don't know when. I like the idea of running coolant around the carb because it frees up you electrical for more important things like hand warmers:face-icon-small-blu

We agree

We have had problems with carb ice on our cast smart carb also on Ktm 300. In zero degree weather and in perfect humidity conditions and warmer than you might think. It is a problem. The fix is coming but will require billet smarty and some R&D time from guys smarter than me.

did you have a heater in it? i got a smarty coming and dont want to have to mess around to much to get it working

The Cast S.C. is prone to some freezing issues. There is an insert that is composite that adds to the equation. The KTM heater "probe" needs to be modified to fit, "length". Corey, "APT", and I have discussed this in length. I have been fortunate to test and tune the cast model in conditions that were trouble free, however they are prone to icing issues. Bottom line is, the billet has the material depth to accommodate the full length probe and no composite insert for the slide. I recommend using the Billet model with two KTM electric heaters. One located at the 10 oclock and one at the 3 oclock positions. I used only one all last season on the KX500 with zero issues. Those two on the Billet carb will be very nice. We are working on an alternative system using a "flow through" aluminum tubing design used on sleds for years. We will have the details this summer and info for ordering etc.

The 2 stroke engine loves to be on the pipe and will pull under a full load at WOT for days. It is very happy being run this way, like our sleds in the past, on the pipe, WOT in the pow for years without even a top end rebuild. We "WILL" get a simple solution to solve the icing issue and the 2 stroke "snowbike" market will break wide open. Compare the number of 4 stroke mountain sleds to two stroke sleds? The 2 stroke has some unique, simple, power to CC advantages etc . We will keep this up front until we get a good universal system for heat.

i think its time to cancel my smart carb order....seems to be alot of people having issues

Call Liz and exchange for a Billet model. Then you are good summer/winter with heat. The dirt only guys are lined up waiting for the cast models. They are not snowbikers and don't need heat. Several snowbikers have swapped this week. It is not a problem for APT and they understand the snowbike application and heat requirements. Give Liz a call. She will take care of you.

Corey himself told me when I ordered my cast model that he would put a bung in there for a carb heater, it won't work now? I was very clear it would be used in snow on my 300. Not sure what to do now. Haven't had any ice trouble on my stock carb

It shouldn't be tough to fix.

Just cast in a coolant jacket like on the TM40's used on the 800R XP's. Should take about 10 minutes to design it on ProE or whatever design software they're using.

And send me a royalty cheque for the idea...haha

Until it's sorted out, I gots me a set of TM's off an XP for $100 and they'll be going on my next project. Add a tempa-flow to it you've got an uncle Bob.

Liquid heatsink retrofit

I ordered one of these off ebay for my cast 38mm. I think it will fit right on the carb body at the front of the slide then tap into the coolant system. Not sure how beefy it is, or how it will handle the cooling system pressure, but for $5 I'll give it a shot. Just search "liquid heatsink" on ebay and it should pop right up. While I'm waiting for it to show up I'm using some brass fittings to make a similar heatsink to accomplish the same thing. Barbed hose fittings into a heavy brass 90 degree fitting. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Water-Cooli...62635?pt=US_Water_Cooling&hash=item1e7e8fa78b Having some trouble attaching pics, so just click the link.

i'm think i'm gonna put the money towards pulse injection. from the reading ive done i will get alot more gains then the smarty could ever offer

Have any links? Sounds like interesting reading.

U have fun with that in the snow lol. If you want call Adam Millar he is in the know about the pulse injection. Lots of info from him on CR Riders. Ron Mccord is also a guy u need to talk to. He is the inventor if you wanna call him that. Good luck ! Let us know how it works for ya !

Its not a gamble, it really works and works well. Its just not the same as a Smartcarb. Two very different things. You will still have all the issues the PWK and the Smarty have in the snow conditions. Ice and air. There was some talk of a pulsed Smarty but there is carb modification that needs to be done amd will be a pile of work and testing to be done first.

Yep, those XP TM'S are exactly the kind of total fix we need. Clean and simple. Tons of endless heat. Even use that same little red valve in just left of the left carb. We will get it. It's a simple problem. Then we will hear lots of "Braaap" in the trees!

Ron just shipped my pulsed injection setup today. In the mean time I have been carving on a pwk on my work bench. With some careful machining you can run a 1/8" brass pipe through the float bowl. I have a feeling that I will experience zero carb icing with some big hp!

Not too many have tuned the pulse like Millar or Ron. Millar (aka Roostius Maximus) is in Manitoba. You should prob start another thread on the pulse. Ill start it up. We kinda hijacked this one lol

Go Smarty LOL
