carls clutch mod and kit - anyone tried yet?

Wondering if anyone has tried the carls primary clutch mod (re-machining) yet?

Also anyone tried their clutch kit and compare vs stock?

Thanks!

I had one on my 09 dragon and what a difference from stock. It was more responsive in both up and back shifting. More lower mid range pull. I plan to get ther kit for my 11 with the clutch face resurfacing done. By the way. you need to check your belt to clutch side clearance. Mine was way off from my dealer and he told me it would no cause any problems.. Hu. not true.. Look in the sticky section on polaris clutching. Ron has a great artical about it,

That's funny that you posted this question. I was just about to post my results from todays test. I put the carls clutch kit that i used in my ported/single pipe 2009 dragon in my pro for todays ride. What a difference! This thing is an animal! I was actually able to pull the steeper of the two angles on the helix, and still hit about 8100. Was never able to do that before on any of my dragons.
We were in about two feet of fresh all day. There was also a 2010 XP with the slp single kit on it with us. I'm not trying to bash the xp's so don't turn it into that. But i rode with this particular sled all last year and it consistently outperformed my 2010 dragon with the single. Not by alot but it did. So i only use it as a reference. With the carls kit in the pro it was not even fair. I could actually wait a couple seconds for him to take off up the hill, and pass him within the first 100 yards.
If this sled is really only 148 hp. Then this is a classic case of "quality vs. quantity".

I'd like to know more about this "kit". I saw a post from someone at Carl's a month or so ago. Do they replace the weights and spring in the primary and the helix and spring in the secondary? I'm sure they don't give away all the fine details, but I'd like to know what I get. I'm thinking of sending in my clutch when I am out for a couple weeks next month. My clutch isn't new anymore. It has around 200 miles now.

How am I supposed to ride your sled, if you do that? :face-icon-small-dis

:focus:

I sent my clutch in to Carls to have the mod done, I should have it back on Monday, going to test next weekend, I am hoping to get their clutch kit also before too long.

i have carls rec. clutch kit for both clutches, it just plain works. If u want the real deal send your primary to indy dan at indy specialtys to get it blue printed.YOU can spend all the money u want on hp. but if it get to the track its worthless, imo

The Carl's clutch kit consists of different weights (EPI) and a different helix. They ran the stock springs in their sleds when they tested this spring I guess and it works. You could always replace your clutch springs for a more consistent performance with RCS springs. I guess I havent heard of anyone else coming up with a clutch kit yet so this should do the trick for me. it's sittin on the bench in the shop right meow

I ran one in my 09 Dragon. It works. Only thing I did not like are the weights they send with it. You will have to adjust the belt side clearance. I have the tools to do that. But I just went with the Polaris weights (10-60). That gave me .015 side clearance which is right in the ball park. Same thing on my Pro RMK. They also send two plastic washers for the secondary spring. I install both washer on one end of the sping. Some guys use three of these washers installing them on both ends.

Sent my clutches in as soon as I picked up my sled over a month ago. Was able to ride for the first time this last Friday and Saturday. Sled ran awesome. It flat out works.

anyone else now with more ride time - comparison between stock clutching and their kit? Still debating on just the clutch kit or do it with the clutch mod (machining), does the machining just help with temps?

Anything you can do to keep clutch temps down = better clutch performance. If temps are down then the clutching is also more efficient.

I agree with you on the power issue. My 08 D8 with all the goodies wouldn't outperform this new sled, both with Carl's clutching. Apparently peak hp isn't what gets these new Pros to the top first!

I did the Carl's machine & balance to my primary and added their helix, I run a different set of weights than the MPI's but my sled runs spectacular!

Has anyone run one that has also run the stock clutching? Would be nice to know if there is a noticeable difference. I had an 09 dragon before my pro and I can say the stock clutching is way better on the pro than it ever was on my dragon. If you have, what is better about it? Cooler clutches, better backshift, smoother, holds rpms better? I know I have been guilty of this before, but sometimes I convince myself it is better because I managed to spend X amount of dollars on it. I am curious, I would hate to jeopardize my warranty on something on this sled in particular, since it seems to outperform or stay right with sleds that supposedly have more horsepower and "aftermarket goodies".

^^ you won't be jepordizing your warranty because your clutch was personalized by a Polaris dealer to match your elevation etc. Per the Owner's Manual that's A ok. I did their mod and weight change to meet my 8-10K+ riding elevation and it is spot on. I can hold my hand on the clutch face after long pulls and it shifts perfect. I'm a happy customer.

I'm not sure I need any clutching help! Sled pulls so hard and hits and holds 81-8300 rpm at 5500' with 62 grams. Haven't paid much attention to heat on the primary yet, was too busy putting a hurting on my riding buddies that were getting stuck!

Took my pro out last weekend, I had Carls clutch mod done, we rode in some pretty deep powder for this time of year, I have no vents on my sled yet and clutches were cool, sled pulled hard and ran awesome

Where did you ride? Cooke? Bighorns? Just trying to get an idea of an elevation. Did you ride your sled much previous to the clutch mod? Was there a noticeable "seat of the pants" feeling? From what I am reading it seems like the benefit most people have noticed is cooler clutch temps. I am wondering if I could achieve this with a few vents, and come out ahead monetarily speaking.
