Canyon Creek Road closed

Canyon Creek Rd washed out about 1.8 miles from Mt Baker Hwy. The Forest Service closed the road until they can get funding for the required repairs. Talking to the road engineer, it looks like it is going to be a major job to repair the road.

Thats not good news..sure you are not trying to keep Bear Paw all to your slef?? :face-icon-small-hap:face-icon-small-hap.

Normally there are always logging operations in that area..if there are they will get that road done in short order..but if there are not at this time it could be a different story.

Who out there is on the inside for Road work in Whatcom county for Forest roads? Any information would be of interest.

could be closed for a while - see below :

Canyon Cr. road was closed yesterday due to damage at mile 1.8. That is past the double switchback & prior to the 3120 road. Engineering cleared two blocked culverts up the road that caused a 5' deep ditch scour until the water backcut at the damage location. Federal Highways has been contacted to assess & fund since the repairs are beyond the cost of our road maintenance budget. A temporary bypass is being considered. A problem to address is that is ground water is flowing at the damage site. Culverts need to be larger.

Can you access Excelsior pass/Bear Paw on fs rd.3040? That's a few miles past the Canyon Creek rd. cutoff on SR542. Or is that a wilderness area?

Just talked to the people at the Mt.Baker Ranger station about Canyon Creek.NOT looking good as fixing that would deplete their funds!:face-icon-small-sad

Can't be done. Unless snow level gets down to the HWY there is not much chance of getting to the Canyon creek area's. You are correct in the next post also, the damage is beyond the FS scope. The best we can hope for is it to be fixed by NEXT year.

Is there any good riding at glacier? Sucks bearpaw is fuc@@@@@@@@@@@@.

There is good riding at Glacier if you know where to go, you also have to know where not to go (wilderness) best to study a map for the boundaries before you go. It's real easy to do a climb up and over a ridge and find yet another bowl, climb that and opens up to yet another area, etc. Beautiful area, with great veiws of Baker and surrounding mountain ranges, unfortunately most of the best riding you cannot access (wilderness) just look at and take pictures. I think it's worth checking out, it's limited in size, terrain can be challenging, but it's no Bearpaw.

We have all the equipment and volunteers needed to fix the road. But the forest service wont let us touch it until the engineers come up with a brilliant plan. The only thing that might make this get fixed faster and maybe cheaper is if we as riders contact our congress. This is according to Jim who is the head guy for the roads. If we wait for the forest service it will not be fixed until July or August at the cost of two hundred thousand.(No joke) No wonder our government agency's are broke! What happened to the day's of looking the other way and letting us fix the road. Like when Whistler creek washed the road out?

A little common sense and the much appreciated help of guys who fix stuff like this every day for there jobs could go along way!

You're not riding the north side (Bearpaw) anytime soon , have to head out Highway 20 with everyone else and ride the south side !
