Can or not

I got my 09 XP and I’m wondering whether or not to put a can on it. From what I have read most of these cans loose power? I like the idea of loosing some pounds but is it really worth the $400 +? The other thing that I was thinking I wonder if adding a light weight can would throw off the balance of the sled, as the Muffler right now would counter act the weight of the clutches, just a thought. Also maybe $400 would be better spent on a clutch kit or something.

o ya better say- i ride between 1800 and 2200m

power loss on cans used in the mtns not likely ,
down low a certian possability
a few pluses is the weight loss ,
wont effect the balance that you will feel it .
consider weather you will feel the added 40 lbs of snow in the skid ,
all are smaller and dont radiat the giant heat the stock er does.
sound level usually a bit more than stock.
doo's mention of cans loosing power was directed at low elevation use only .
sleds dont make the same pressure as you get up in elevation with them.

the weight loss is nice, you may not directly notice it, BUT, its still 5-10 pounds less weight in the front of your sled, just think, thats 5 less pounds your gonna dig out when you get stuck, the extra space seems to help really good at helping disipate heat, less metal just sitting around, and i dont know what can your looking at that costs 400 bucks, but you can get a decent one for 200 and good ones for below or at 300, then spend a little more and get a DJ clutch kit, these two combined are gonna be the cheapest weight loss, and the most performance your gonna get out of a DOO without dropping some serious coin.

ya i have heard mixed reviews about that can? if i were to get one i think that i would go with HPS or SLP. I used to run an MBRP on my old sled, no beefs with that can it was alright

I was told by two dealerships the mbrp can gives the most hp on the new sleds (comparing to other aftermarkets). Not sure whether its true or not, but its what i've been told.

as far as wether or not you need a can. you wont notice any power difference. you wont notice the weight difference or balance. you will notice the sound. i like a can, just like buying cool stuff for my sled. as far as the mbrp can goes it was doos top of the list can in the race manual on thier dyno at sea level. like turboal mentioned its a whole different game at elevation.

so there's no hp gain at higher elevation?

Tha Hp gain is there--but different cans react differently depending on where you ride. The THING is designed for Mountian riding--NOT the flats. To make the Thing work--you need to do more than just bolt in on--you need to do as Turboal tells you to do with the can to get full benefit of the accessory you have just added. There is alot that goes into the theory of how a can works, or does not work, to be more effective. The Thing is designed to hold the proper pressure in the pipe at elevation to retain HP and torque gains. As we know--compression drops as we go up. The factory does not design their cans to do this. Years of testing and Dynoing have go into the design of these cans at elevation to get the designed benefit to hold the proper flow and pressure at elevation--so it holds better efficency in the pipe/can at elevation to hold more HP up high.
I can tell you I have several freinds that ride in Utah at high elevations--10,000 plus, that had their sleds dialed in and came north and tried Things out for 1 day on the hills of Revelstoke and needless to say they all purchased the Thing cans--in fact they took some home with them to sell they were so impressed.

It all depends on where you ride as to how you set it up.

Agreed call Turbo Al and see what he's got for the 09 they are good guys and always willing to help a guy out.

So when funds are tight (like right now) what do you do?

-Buy pretty can

-Ride a bit and get a clutch kit (although there is going to be no clutch or belt issues this year on skidoos.....Right??)

Just ride and enjoy it stock couple HP either way wont matter one bit.Use extra money for gas , hotel, beacon whatever you want dont be fooled over all the hype of aftermarket junk, believe me I know.
