Can I put a 6203 bearing in the oven?

Thought this would make it easier to install the bearing. This is a sealed bearing. Has rubber on the outside that might not be able to take the heat. I've read you can heat bearings up to but no more than 240 F.

I wouldn't........it is not likely that you will see very much expansion in the steel inner race to make it easier to install. In my line of work we use shrink fits through thermal expansion with different materials often and steel takes quite a bit of temperature to get it to move......especially the hardened races of a bearing.

If you don't have a press......find a socket with that matches up well with the inner race and with a small hammer lightly tap the bearing into place being sure not to let the socket slip off that inner race while doing so. That's just my two cents.........I used a press at work to instal this bearing on my sled and a couple of buddies and it went on pretty easy......with an arbor press powered by hand.....no hydraulics.....just bicep power Good luck!

If you're talking about getting it back on the shaft that's part of the transfer gear assembly, how about just putting the whole assembly in the freezer to get the shaft to contract?

I believe that is how i did it. Put the gear in the freezer.

Yep put gear in freezer and bearing in oven at 200 and bearing falls onto shaft no pressing needed.

those bearings are not that tight of a pressed fit. i'm w/ diamond8 use a socket on inner race and keep it going on straight. i used a socket in a vise to put mine on and its really didn't take much.

Mine wasn't that difficult either. Socket, tap tap tap, done. It goes on not bad at all. No need to bake a Diamond Drive Casserole in the oven

I did not turn the oven on, but did use the freezer. Still had to tap it on but it was super easy. Thanks

1-ton arbor press

I used a press like this and had no problems. I got it a couple years ago for $20.00. It has come in use full over the years.

I asked an SKF rep once, he said you could heat a bearing to 300F no problem, that's why they make temp sticks.
