Camo Challenger Extreme 2.5"

So i am wondering about the new Challenger extreme 2.5", considering it for my Assault. I ride mtns, climbing and boondocking.

My question is, what is the difference between this Extreme Challenger and the Challenger from a few years ago, (besides lug height), the Challenger found on the old 1M sleds and some Mseries was a fine track but there really wasnt anything special with it. so what differentiates the extreme track from the old challenger? Ive heard guys say its so great, why?? the lug pattern and shape looks the same on the tracksusa pics....

thanks!

the extreme just works way better than the stock polaris track its kinda like how a posi trac in a plymouth works no one knows it just does

It's just the "cool" thing to have! Plus it looks good in your signature "Camo Extreme"

For all around performance folks use it because it works great in all conditions maybe not the best in every condition. But good braking and good climbing traction.. The extreme and the old challenger have basically the same lug pattern just taller lugs and a wider track. The durometer of the rubber might also be different.

after reading more posts regarding the camo extreme i am seeing words like "trench" and "stiff" well that is the very thing I am worried about with the assault track i have now. i am wondering if im going to see much improvement with the camo ex.

not just that but a 2.5" lug isnt going to leave much room in that tunnel, going to sap some HP i would think

its going to cost me $350+ AFTER trade so what do you think. alot of opinions are that the camo ex is better than the 5.1 on the Dragons, all around, but i dont have the 5.1., is it worth it?

Thoughts??

Don't know anything about the Assault track and haven't ridden with one. I did switch to a CE on my 08 D8 and it was a huge improvement. I also went with 7 tooth Avid extros at the same time so I gained a little clearance. I ride with both my sons who at that time could mark me on the hill by a ways. After the switch those days were over. Riding side by side with them before and after was a great comparison.

As for trenching, to me, all sleds trench until we ride on solid snow then they trench less. What I noticed was once you felt momentum stopping with the CE you better be turning out. With the 5.1 (and maybe others) you could work it a little or maybe gain the other 10' you needed slowly grinding it out. Not so with the CE. When you think you are starting to get stuck and don't turn or shift weight, you are stuck. If you think you will grind it out with RPM's.....think again. You'll be digging for a month.

All that said, the point that you need to turn out on the hill is still 1/3 higher up the hill than where you would have been at least on the 08.

For me there was a short learning curve (mass digging helps speed it up) to riding with the CE. Now that I am boosted and have ridden the track in year round conditions and snow from Colorado to BC I would never go back. Like stated above, I think it is a great selection for a one size fits all terrain/conditions track. Look at the Cat Power Claw as well, heard nothing but happy stuff about it last year. Good luck. EW

I have the Cam Ex on my 08 D8 and it works well. Night and day improvement over the stock track.

IMO... the best combo backcountry/freeride track for the Assaults that get used in the deep often would be the Camo Extreme 2.5" 150" length...

A tunnel extension would NOT be needed.

The 150" is a 3" pitch which will allow you to use the 7 tooth drivers for more clearance.

The 2" longer installed length would require a bit of a setback on the skid and an offset axle to take up the difference on the rail

OR

Sell your current rails and for 75% of the cost of new rails from Ice Age and have a super clean install.

Do you need to buy different drivers for a CE install?

I looked at the drivers on the Assault for my 146x2" CE track install. I noticed that the stock driver on the left side doesnt have much room to move over any farther to the outside of the splined driveshaft in order to sit in the centre of the drive nubs on the new track.

Whats the solution?

ps - I should probably know as I've read endless threads about the swap...but I'm brain dead from the neck up today.

No....

The 150" CE 2.5" track does though.

On this chassis, I would consider this to be the Ideal track.

There is such little clearance for the stock track that the smaller 7 tooth drivers (only available in a 3" pitch) will free up some HP (less drag/windage resisance)

The CE 146 has very little (approx 1/4" or less at the roof of the tunnel at the end of the coolers.... not good!

clips

I'm not totally sure, but I think the older challenger track was clipped every other or every third, right? (in addition to other already noted differences) and the CH-EX is clipped every hole - I know my new one is.

I'm a big fan of the CH-EX, but part of that is the snow we have here in W. WA. It's just different, and the Ch-Ex seems to work best. And, Mountainhorse is correct, if you switch, somehow, you need more room, either D&R, or smaller dia drivers. I chose D&R, with new combo drivers from Avid (same dia), cuz I wanted the extrovert tips.

Sasky, i just checked, and if you keep your stock drivers, the underside of the CE track has another row of nubs on the inside that I think will line up with your stock drivers. I was in too much of a hurry to check this before I pulled mine off to put the Avids on. I got excited.

The CE 146 I ordered was a regular 15x146x2. I want to remove the centre extrovert driver as this new track has no centre port.

The only other CE that was available in a 146" length was the 15x146x2.5 with the ports for the centre extro, but, 2.5" where I ride is too much track.

Also, I checked the new track again and there are only 4 rows of drive nubs. Not 6 rows like the 2.5" version made specifically for the Assault.
Thats where my question originally came from. It looks as though I'll have to move the left/right drive sprocket over to sit in between the 2 rows of drive nubs, but, there doesnt appear to be enough room on the splined shaft (left side only) to accomodate this....

I installed avid drivers on my dragon and the left avid driver is only half splined and when you install them it's a nice tight press but the driver is made to slide over the un splined shaft. About half splined and the farther left side is a little bigger and will slide over the non-splined shaft. Makes sense. all I can say is THEY WORK. Get them. lol

sasky, that is the same track i put on my assault last year. u need to run the avid drivers with that track for the reason u mentioned. kind of sucks cause i thought that track would fit right on but it dosent. remember with combo drivers u also need to trim your rails and use an anti-stab kit.
