Buena vista riding

apparently you can still drive a truck up to irwin lodge right now because there is so little snow

Last I heard (about 2 weeks ago, but no snow since then) the cat ski operation is driving cats from the Y to the lodge. When I drove up to the Y on Tuesday night there were 7 or 8 cars/trucks parked there, looks like the residents of Irwin townsite are driving to the Y then sledding the last mile or so. But, if you chained up I'm sure there wouldn't be much of a problem to get at least to the lake, just not really worth trying as that ditch can be a mofo if you slip a corner in.

Point is, not much snow around right now. But you can have some fun, especially if you make a point to avoid any south aspects. Splains Gulch would probably be a better spot right now. I'll go rip around next weekend and if I remember to I'll report back. Happy New Years, be safe and have fun!

Goinboardin, thanks for putting those numbers up. Very hard not to get into
pissin matches here. I cant even imagine the snowfall at baldie in 07-08. Way more than irwin.

zachcreek, by no means was I being agro. It was more of a if you get sucked into the mont you may not wake up for a couple days comment.

And yes the pizza does rock. Dated a chick that worked there, like 7 years ago.

Numbers ,fractions, and browns rock as well.

We are both fortunate to live in such a beautiful area. I bet the flatlanders are shaking their heads right now with our discussion.....lol :face-icon-small-coo BTW, we rescued some dogs up springs creek way last year. A guy from CB lost his dogs and we brought them out. caught up with them near the trail head in Almont....

Good man. Last year I was on my way down from star pass up spg creek, and found a couple kittens that someone set out for lion bait. They were so petrified, I picked them up and they stuck their claws in my jacket and had to
be pried off at the truck. They didn't stop whining for 3 days. Has nothing to do with riding buena, but, but , watever.

BV/Cottonwood is awesome!
Some of the biggest views imaginable.

As for Irwin..
Just a hair over 1000" in 2008. (using the Rozman recording method - measuring stick & notebook)
Couldn't drive into Irwin Townsite until mid-July. Ugh.
14+ feet of standing base. (see attached)

738" total in 2010/2011. (using the CS Irwin snow data station)

2011/2012 = 77" so far, 1-2' of standing base. (using the CS Irwin snow data station)
I drove into the townsite TODAY. Jan 2nd.

Sunny & 72. Calm.

;-)

MD.

Aso.. 2nd pic, folks at the Last Chance Cabin (under the snow) had to tunnel to the outhouse(stage right). J/K.
Aso Aso Wik... 3rd pic. This is a shed built 3' OVER an full size RV sitting on a hill. Look carefully and you can see the top of the RV's roof underneath. ;-)

Having a real hard time with your Snowfall numbers, is there a Snotel site close by?
Have lived in Colorado since 1976 & can't say I ever seen snowfall numbers like that before.

mtndoo, thanks for having my back. That 2nd pic is above byros house ins't it? Last year I had to shovel that thing twice with 8' on the roof, as well as
gut it out for the bank that repossed it. DISGUSTING!!!!!!!! Got her cleaned up and someone bought it the next week.

Thanks again.

JA - no prob. Facts is facts. And Rozman records it old-skool style. No sno-tel automated snow-pillow infrared guessing crap.

The 2nd pic is the Last Chance Cabin just past Carr's place on the left. Past Biro's.

Word is Jersey's house (above Biro's, not pictured) went back to the bank and he reportedly took off for Boulder or Denver. Ferchau sold it, and a new feller put in $100k worth of work and made it into a mini-mansion. Quite a nice renovation. You wouldn't recognize it - the smell of mouse turds is gone. Historic note - that was Biro's original house.

More pics.
The old cat is at least 1x cat height above the ground in my driveway. Appx 10'. That's 2010.

In the other pic, of my sled is an easy 5'-6' above the ground in the path we cleared with the cat.

;-)

Thanks for the pictures!
Still not buying 83 feet of snowfall in one season,
Here's what 752" looks like in March of 2011 & not Colorado,
or the Rozman Recording Method. Would love to take Rozman fishing with us :)!

Funny thing is, Rabbit Ears gets at least 2x the snowfall Irwin does!
;-)

Those pics look like Sierra Cement to me (high water content). ....and LOTS of it!!!

Thanks, mtndew. I can't wait to get back home to hit irwin. hopefully there wil be snow by then. Yeah, I know all about jersey, and his antics. Looking forward to seeing the new cabin. Ferchau is a good man, done lots of
work for that guy.

Awesome pic boofit. That would be a bad time for a 7.2 lol

My brother and I heading out to buena vista on january 21 to have some fun in the mountains was wondering how cottonwood pass is doing for snow fall this year. We are from the southwest michigan area and as we know winter hasnt started here yet please let us know how things are or if there is a better place to go thanks

I just got back from the worst New Years week I have ever seen out in Taylor Park. It was awful, we found a few small pockets where we could get off the trail but the willows were still sticking through way more then I have ever seen them. As for right now I would say the 21st is not promising, keep a eye out for storms becasue they need them. Cottonwood had tire marks all the way up to the chutes on the Taylor Park side. The east side of Cottonwood Pass was better the the West and South was better then North and that is a first for me. If you go good luck and watch out for rocks and asphalt.

Not to hijack...but that was one year ago last weekend. Little different story this year. This is what Mark and I did Saturday, but luckily we didn't find any dogs this time. They would've been SOL with our means of transportation anyways(They were sled dogs).
On the plus side, my plan to anger the snow gods seemed to work as it snowed on us the whole way home:face-icon-small-hap
This was a little bit east of Buena Vista. Let's just say I wasn't complaining about a lack of snow for once...
