Buena vista riding

My brother and I heading out to buena vista on january 21 to have some fun in the mountains was wondering how cottonwood pass is doing for snow fall this year. We are from the southwest michigan area and as we know winter hasnt started here yet please let us know how things are or if there is a better place to go thanks

are we making a wrong choice on going to buena vista ic alot of good snow in grand mesa please let me know so we can make new reservations at a different place im really woried about this since this is our first snowmobile trip

Flatlander along with you here...... But what I have seen and read more snow to the south. Obviously everybody is below what they would like to have. I want to say buena vista may be a better choice than grand mesa as far as snow depth.

I am sure someone else on here will chime in to help us both out. Perhaps somebody a little more local than 1200 miles away! Haha. Either way, good luck and Merry Christmas.

Where are you guys headed to

I had a trip planned to head to that area leaving tomorrow from Indiana and have postponed it till they get more snow. I got a call last night from a buddy staying at his cabin at 11,000+ feet in that area and he said it is very thin, not even good road riding. It could be great riding in a few weeks, or not much different than now, I would leave plans open for now if possible.

Just curious, how did you pick that area to ride?

VERY VERY THIN, Widespread all over the state unless you go south. There are pockets of snow here and there but nothing to waste your money on coming out here to ride. Its not like last year....

I live in Indiana and have been dirtbiking that area for almost 30 years and snowmobiling for about 15. It does not have much of a snowmobile trail system, so unless you know the area it can be hard to find the good spots.
It would be best to find someone local to show you around. When I first started heading west to sled 20 years ago I mostly went to Towgotee and the Snowies in WY because of the trail systems to get you to the back country areas. Back then you didn't have sites like this to get info or hook up with locals.

yea that was our plan the lady that owns the cabin said her husband knows a bunch of people who would take us out for a day or two for way less money than burandts place.

Crystal ball says, who knows. Good road riding up tword St Elmo area. Still won't get off trail unless I know whats under the snow. Things can change here in a matter of days. As in anywhere as a matter of fact. Rabbit Ears, here, WC area. Thunder Lodge has some nice cabins here in town. I would not worry about it to much at this point. A couple of good dumps and we are back in the swing of things again....

Thanks for the update on the areas I'm sure I'll get continued posts as my trip gets closer

Guys, I live in almont, co.Which is on the other side of the divide from BV.
Cottonwood is pretty cool, but nothing compared to Irwin, which is
in Crested Butte. There is very little snow right now, but don't panic.
By jan 21 there will be plenty of snow. If you choose to go to Irwin, you
can lodge at the Almont resort, which is 1/2 hr from irwin. These are the
snow fall numbers at irwin the last 3 years.

2008-700 plus inches
2009-860-1000 inches
2010- 800 plus

Irwin trail head 9500 ft
max 12,500
every kind of terrain known to man.
