Broken primary spring

I think I will try the SLP spring. Does SLP have a spring with the same rates? My sled already pulls 8250. I dont think I want another 200 rpms. Thanks

SLP blue/red is 140/320. That may bring you down to approx. 8,100.

Sent from my iPhone when I should be sledding.

Seems like a common problem, I wonder if Polaris will do a Service bulletin/Recall..

I'll just swap mine before it breaks, not worth the hassle.:tea:

Has anyone broke a spring besides the stock polaris spring? That would be a good indicator if its a bunch of bad springs or something causing a variety of springs to break. A resonance at just the right frequency will take out a spring fast... Just have to figure out what is causing this and how to slightly alter this if this is the cause.

Although running with a broken primary isn't good for your sled, I doubt a service buletin/recall will ever come of it. When I got my 2010 M8 it broke the primary spring in less than 200 and almost every single person I talked to had the same thing happen, so Cat just told their dealers to use the yel/black replacement when people inevitably broke their spring.

I snapped mine on my 2011 Pro last season right at 200 miles. Put an SLP blue/pink in and have 800 miles since with no problems. I also carry a spare spring now just in case.

SLP Blue Red

Hey, I got a 2012 and am going to change this spring out. Was going to do the Blue Pink and install 10-64's or 66's since I wanted to drop 100-200 rpm (8300rpm) anyway. Instead maybe I should install this Blue Red spring and this should do the trick and just keep the 10-62's I have in?

This shouldne change any other performance much? i really like the way the sled ran stock, once it opened up a bit after a few hrs I was hitting 83-8350's. dont want to loose how well it works.

What you guys think? I want to change springs out before I damage something.

If you stand a new140-330 Polaris spring on the bench, you will see that it stands at an angle. When under load in the primary the spring contacts the spider lock nut. This is causing premature wear and breakage. Look for contact on your lock nut, it will show up before spring breakage. It will also wear on the inside of your spring. If you can purchase an the old Polaris almond round(140-330) it is a better spring. If you buy a Polaris black 140-330 make sure it is from an old lot. How to tell if it is from the old lot, both ends touch the previous coil. The new lot, ends are a 1/4" from resting on the previous coil. They also sag quickly, causing a loss of RPM.

Hmmm...maybe there was a reason that Burandt told me to trash the stock spring and do the Renton Coil Titanium 165/310??? Seems like lots of people have twisted primary springs off!!

However, I didn't listen to him and ran an almond TEAM spring (165/310) and it lasted a whole 150 miles before shearing in half...

I am going to check my spider nut when installing the new SLP spring I purchased from Michelle at Oregon Trail Sports :) for any unusual wear...wonder if my TEAM almond was contacting it which made it snap prematurely...

If clutching advice cost you 500 bones you took bad advice.:boxing: HA HA, in all seriousness hopefully your sled is ripping now.

I just got word today that when the spring broke it chewed up the cap on the primary. Polaris is replacing the entire primary clutch less the weights. Now that is one exspensive spring. I am stoked I have a 4 yr warrenty. I will be carrying an extra spring from now on.

Newbie question, Can the sled be ridden back to the truck with a broke spring? if not do I just need a 13/16 and a 3/8 to remove the outer clutch to replace the spring if I carry a extra?

Appreciate the info!:tea:
