Broken Primary Clutch Springs ??

ID get off your high horse. I didn't say a thing about how much you are charging, in fact I said that I wasn't going to mess with getting an order done since you already have the washers in stock. If I had known that you had them I wouldn't have even ordered material from McMaster, I would have ordered them from you!

I broke my drive spring with less than 500km on my 2012 Pro RMK. I had to drive it 10km from where it broke on the mountain to where my truck was. There are quite a bit of marks on the the clutch where the spring seats and one large mark on the cover where the broken spring was rubbing. My dealer gave me a new spring and is going to see if Polaris will warranty the clutch. I'm crossing my fingers on the new clutch. The spring broke in the same spots as the ones posted above.

It will break again and probably sooner now that the clutch has the gouges where the spring seats. Everybody should be putting the delrin washers in their clutches, not just for breakage, but to help prevent them from sacking out from the added stress the binding puts them through.

I still don't understand why we are having issues... Polaris hasn't changed they're clutches like ten years no??? My service guy still thinks its the springs and all I kno is I don't wanna mess with broken springs out there... So putting these washers in is that te fix everyone is using?? Anyone put them on and still have issues? Does it change anything with the running of the sled or u just put them on and that's it? Just one on the one side or one on each or what? Sorry I'm new to workin on the sleds haha

The clutches may have not changed, but the issues are not all new. I have seen for years that the springs gouge the spider as well as the sides of the cup and sometimes a side of the cover by the bushing. I am personally running a higher spring rate because of the turbo, whether this affects it or not, I don't know. I do know that more time at full shift out is going to bind them more. I rode mine for 2 days with one delrin washer and I'll look at it more tomorrow. I do know that it didn't eliminate the issue altogether and I did see that the spring is going coil to coil as well.

What about using the thinnest spider side clearance washer under the spring? It's not delrin but should be harder than the aluminum and not allow the spring to dig in.

Would this work?...or are the dimensions different?

I pulled the spring to check it out. Even with 1 delrin washer that I made, it still took the paint off the outer part of the spring. It didn't seem as sharp against the spring as before, but nothing definitive. I did notice that the cover seemed to be gouged more, so I added a washer to that side.

What thickness delrin are you using? Do you have enough clearance or are you running into coil bind?

.031" The coils are binding on the end but not in the middle, it was also doing the same thing w/o the washer.

As long as the coils aren't all touching I think it would be ok.

Did you order a sheet, or solid round from McMaster?

Thinking of adding some to our McMaster order, want as thin as possible, but not so thin that the spring gouges through it....

Yes.

Started carrying a spare after reading this thread. They are small and cheap ride insurance....

Heck yes Bull...I carry two additional springs cause I don't trust this thing as far as primary clutching is concerned:(

Waiting for my washers from Indy Dan and I sure hope this solves my problems...

I am not, but we really shouldn't need to. This should be a fixable issue, get rid of the spider contact and get rid of the cause of the breakage.

Dan's derlin will be the fix.
Does anyone remember the plastic spring cup Polaris had in the 2000 800 RMK?
This is another problem triples don't witness.

I took my primary spring and ground the sharp edge of the ends of the spring. Perhaps it will keep the spring from digging into the seat of the primary? Not sure, but worth a shot.

I've done that to all my springs for years Seth.

I've been using Thunderproducts glide washers in the Cat clutches for a few years now with great success... http://www.thunderproducts.com/glide_washer.htm

I put these in my pro with a Speedwerx H5 125/340 spring and it did amazing last weekend. No paint taken off yet. 60 miles. The speedwerx springs fit better in the cat clutches. The SLP springs always fit in the Cat clutches too tight and will bind in the cup. Just a thought on these pro's.
