Broke a ring

Hey guys, I have an 08 XP. It got a fresh cylinder and pistons about 400 miles ago. On Saturday it was tagging the det sensor every time I left it wide open for very long at all. I took it home and pulled the head off thinking the chamber shape was not good. What I found was kind of a shocker to me. One end of the ring had broken off, worked around until it got up through the piston crown and proceeded to play tap dance all over my piston and head. It put a few hundred deep pits in the outside edge of the piston and head at the squish band.

Is this common?? Seemed a tad strange to me??

Funny thing, mine did the same thing this weekend. Cylinder junk, head salvagable but not pretty, piston junk.

Hmm. I wonder what the deal is. It didn't scrap my cylinder, but wasnt super good for it either.

Did your ring show signs of chafing in the groove?? Mine looked like it was moving around more than it should.
