BraKe issue

another bleed

2nd time now I bled the same wildwood caliper and long hose BUT with something other than stock little dirt bike master cyl.

For sure my brake bleeding issue on my YZ250 was the YAMAHA master cylinder? With the Yamaha master master cylinder that would not bleed out, stoking the lever did not produce bubbles coming up through the reservoir indicating that air in the line was being replaced by fluid.

With the bigger road bike master cylinder, from 1st to last stroke, air was always rising through the reservoir , never did have to stroke the lever / hold and bleed air at the caliper. All the air came back up through the reservoir fluid and done.

I was at Timbersled recently and they told me when using the stock master cylinder from the bike it's a good idea to put two spacers behind the pistons on the caliper which requires using compressed air to pop them out. This blocks the pistons from returning back into the caliper to deeply and is supposed to help braking performance. Spacers I used were roughly .200" thick and matched the dia of the piston. Pic shows how far the pistons retract after the mod.

I built spacers and fooled with that on my kits. on the blue wildwood a 3/8" steel washer inside the caliper ( .075-.090 thick ) will keep your stainless pucks from retracting so far in and gives you better instant brake. fought this issue on the sleds we built with disc on driveshaft in the tunnel ten years ago. Ice freezing on the disc tends to keep shoving pad and puck back, spacer keeps that from happening so pad is right on disc when needed. As for the current MH kit, haven't fooled with it. for sure as pads wear anything to keep the pad lightly on the disc would help.

I was thinking the same thing the pads are moving to far apart causing the brake issues. I also adjusted the travel so the pedal moves very little to activate the brakes hoping that will help too.

For those of you who have had the wilwood caliper apart, is there any form of knock off spring in there? In race cars, it's a trick to reduce friction and increase cooling.. I'm wonder if these calipers might be speced for a go-kart or something and they come pre-installed from the factory? If they do, all we gotta do is take out the knock off springs out, and then we'll get some drag, which would assist in keeping the disc ice free... Just a thought.

for sure on the older blue bodies nothing in there but room for the puck. New black MH, I am betting the same with spacer or deeper pucks or ?
