bought a 9 sec. (supposedly) camaro today w/pics!

Honestly, hopefully you didn't spend more than couple grand for it. As you dig into this thing, you're going to find a lot of little things such as fuel pump, brake's, battery, etc that'll need replacing and it's all that nickel & dime sh!t that ads up. I'm sure the tag on chassis is expired and by looking at that cage, it won't re-cert for anything quicker that 10.00 with out installing kidney bars etc. Far as a nine second ride with that motor, even when it was fresh highly unlikely. My first drag car was very similar to this one back in the day. My car was 2800lbs I ran a 700hp 468 roller motor and it ran consistant 10.30's. You have a lot of work to do there to make this thing sellable. If you're in it really cheap you should be able to make a couple bucks on it, if you do most of the work yourself. If you have to hire somebody else to it, might be a bit harder to come out on it. I'm a huge muscle car fan and love to see projects like this when they turn out. Good luck, you may get it running and decide to go tear up the 1320 like I did, then it's no turning back.........:D

I hope your machine shop is doing a thurough job of insureing your valve train is correct. I've seen guys slap that chit back together with new parts only to have it happen again.
If the valve didn't hit the piston, it could be coil bind that split your rockers. Incorrect rocker geometry can do this as well. And judging by the multi colored rockers, I'll bet this isn't the first time those rockers were replaced.
Good luck,, it looks like fun.

My guess, is that it had a different motor in it (capable of running nines) and they put the 468 in it to sell it. I dont think someone would spend the money on a chute, wheely bars, braced 9" diff etc on a slower than 9 second car. Does the 468 have a roller cam etc? What cylinder heads? When was the cage last certified? More details would help.

i heard the fuel pump come on when i hit the switch, brakes seem ok when i pulled it off the trailer. batteries might be fawked..

i think your right.. but, i have both heads off now.. so, well see i guess.. i know its not a 9 sec car after talking to the guy at the machine shop..

cage was cert in 2007, says sportsman class..

rigrat, i think your right, probably had a diff motor in it.. heads are sh!t heads..

i really dont know any other details besides it has domed pistons, roller rockers, roller lifters, im working on getting the cam out now..

Dont know if you live near southern alberta but if you are looking for any BBC parts, let me know. I have a bunch of stuff from my 461 BBC. I am in the process of building a 598 so i have extra roller cams, lifters, rockers, engine block etc.

How can a person sell a car like that and say,,,,the starter doesnt work!!!!

I would feel like a heel if I did that to someone

Sounds like this guy was a complete crook!!!

Body on the car looks good, if anything, depending on what you paid for it, sell it as a rolling chassis?

So what did you do to the guy who sold you the car???

"Oh Yeah, it'll run like mid 9's...... it just needs a starter....." :D:D:D

I hate dishonest people like that. I couldn't imagine doing that to someone and not expecting an angry response. Did you at least call him and say dude! WTF!!! Don't tell me you didn't notice the little "knock"!!

I hope this works out for you and really hope you didn't pay much for it. I would venture to say it's a bum motor.

You should be able to tell what kind of heads they are if you have them off? What does the trans look like?

I said what I said because a 9 second car is a fast car that can kill you in a heartbeat. Knowing now that the cage has been OKed I would feel much better about running it. I wasn't trying to be negative.

i called him numerous times.. finally got an answer this morning.. rheemed him out and told him how he fawked me.. dude answers the phone and says "oh, thats my bud your lookin for, ill call him and we will call you back within 5 minutes".. 7 hours later.. no call.. i tried him again, no answer..

If this car ever ran in the 9's, it wasnt with that motor. Hopfully if you do get it running, you wont find out that the tranny is bad. My advice is to strip it down and part it out, really sorry. It is stories like this that make a person realize what is wrong in the world today. D

Before I/we put all the blame on the seller, based on the pics you posted, come on, you really didn't think this thing was even close to being a 9sec. car did you?

for whatever reason i decided it was a good idea to buy this 70 camaro drag car today. calle dthe guy and he says the car will run 9.40's.. so, i go to look at it.. i looked it over with a bud of mine, it all looked ok.. guy says, i guarantee it runs but, the starter is bad.. "i wouldnt fawk anyone" and turns the mortor with a wrench, all looks good.. so, my bud says "dude, this thing is worth the money".. so, i bust the guy back ($100 bills in hand always works!!).. anyway, i pick up a starter on the way home thinkning ill just slap it in in the morning and all will be good..
i stop at another buds house in the hood on my way home to show him, we take the hood off to take a peek at the 468 c.i. motor and i notice (why the he!! i didnt notice while i was looking att he car, i dont know) the bolts are missing from the right side valve cover.. i grab the valve cover and pull it off.. fawkin broken rockers!!! pissed me right off!!!

so, i get it home, pull the laft side valve cover off expecting to find the same thing.. nope!! like new..

so, i pull whats left of the rockers off the right side and find a broken valve.. then, i pull the intake and head off the left side expecting to find one he!! of a mess..

suprisingly, the tops of the pistons looked pretty good..

so, i guess ill go buy some roller rockers tomorrow and see what happens..

heres the pics by the way.. no, its not a real z28..
So... I'm not all that savy about built up race cars and such (I can turn a wrench on my old truck and that's about it) but with broken rockers, broken valves, bent rods , and god knows what else with this car, wouldn't one be able hear all that sh!t when he ghetto started the thing? And your friend seemed pretty confident with you buying this as a good deal(being represented as a 9 sec car). Is this a new venture for you?

And people think car salesmen are crooked. I've seen more people get fawked by private party deals than you can shake a stick at. Makes a guy want to put up a message on a billboard near this guys house with an open message how this guy misreped the vehicle...or fill out a bunch of subcriptions to mags like, high times, canibus, gay pride, juggies. Also go online and find all the junk sign up offers and put hit info in it. Keep his mailbox stuffed with junkmail and his phone ringing with solicitors.

I don't know a lot about 9 second cars but I'd venture a guess that that thing at least has the potential to make the traction needed to get into the 9's based on the tires and rear suspension. I have no idea how much HP it would take though. If I had to guess I'd say somewhere in the 7 to 750 range? Anybody else have any idea?

It looks like it has a Victor jr, some 3" tube headers, and a Holley 850 DP? If that thing had a solid bottom end, the right cam, and some excellent heads what kind of HP would it be making??

i have to be honest, i should have looked closer at the engine.. but, yes, the car itself was built to be a pretty serious car..

im gonna talk to the guy at the machine shop tomorrow (looks like it needs the heads redone (couple valves, springs, 2 lifters, pushrods, set of rockers..) but, looks like the bottom end is ok but needs the top end redone.. i have found out that yes, with this engine, it will not be a 9 sec car.. i may end up just selling it the way it is..
