BLU-RAY DISC - Snowmobile Videos??

I have a Blue-Ray player and would definetly buy a sled flick if it was in High Definition...also needs to have some good turbo footage as well.

From a producers standpoint, cost is the biggest prohibiter at this point. Like summitHD said, the cost to produce a commercial Bluray DVD is exponentially higher than SD. Mandatory copy protection fees start from $2500. And mastering fees range from $2500-$5000. These are all before 1 blu-ray disc is completed. Factor in the per disc cost being 3-5x higher than SD.

With the market so small at the moment and the fees so high, it'll make it tough to release a blu-ray and even break even. So that begs the question, from a consumers standpoint how much are you willing to pay for a Blu-ray snowmobile film: $30? $35? $40?

No matter the cost, there WILL be blu-ray snowmobile films available this fall.

Thanks for all the replys!

Good to hear that some snomobile vids will be out in Blu-ray....can't wait to see em!!! Given that the cost is much higher to produce them, I wouldn't have a problem paying up to $35.

does anyone know if any of the production companies are filming in 1080p? now thats high def! I know there is a few ways of producing high def, will it be upconverted to blue ray high def, or will it be filmed in native high def? if its filmed in high def, which resolution? 720p, 1080i, 1080p?

Dunatic, and Phatty, I was wondering why you use the optical cable, when your hooked up through HDMI? As I understood it, HDMI will carry both your video, and uncompressed audio signals to give you better sound than the optical cable, and you will then be able to go past 5.1 surround sound, do I have this wrong? I thought that was the big thing HDMI had over DVI, just curious before I make the switch myself

For those looking to get a blu-ray, the ps3 is the blu-ray to get right now, its cheaper, and has one of the highest quality blu ray drives, which is upgradable through software which is a huge plus over stand alone blu ray players.

I am definetly happy to hear they are coming out on blu-ray I wouldnt have a problem paying $15-$20 extra for the high def, as long as its not being upconverted, and its an actual true high def.

the cost of blu-ray duplication is going to suck but it has to be done, at least in some small quantity to get the ball rolling IMO.

we shoot our movie in both 720PN (Progressive Native) and 1080i (interlaced).

it is very difficult for most viewers to see a difference between 1080 and 720, both are HD. at ABC, we broadcast in 720HD (all HD programs like Lost, Grey's Anatomy and Dancing with the Stars) to free up bandwidth for other digital information and sub-channels. Our sister company ESPN (both owned by Disney) broadcasts in 1080i. i can see a difference in certain conditions and lighting but both 720 and 1080 look amazing. i shoot primarily in 720PN for two reasons: 1: i get a ton more storage on the P2 cards and 2: i can shoot in variable frame rates to capture REAL slo-mo.i can shoot at 60fps just like a film camera and get much cleaner shots of sleds flying through the air than taking realtime footage and slowing it down in post-production.

the Sony PS3 is a great way to get Blu-Ray into your home AND have a gaming center PLUS, the PS3 works great as a web browser right on your big screen. for those out there looking into blu-ray...i would suggest this if the cost isn't an issue. and yes, hook it up with a good quality HDMI cable which does pass HD video and audio.

The problem i have is my 5.1 surround is not set up to take HDMI cable. Thus I would either need to run direct audio cables from the PS3 into my surround system (which the PS3 doesnt have so its not an option) or run my HDMI cable into 7.1 surround system and then from there another HDMI into the TV. The new 7.1 systems are overpriced and i dont really think its that much better than the 5.1, so thats not an option either.

So I run the HDMI directly into my TV (Samsung HL-T5689S). The TV speakers suck, but the TV has a digital audio out that i can run into my 5.1 system. Its the only way to get from PS3 to my surround system. It works awesome and I really dont have any complaints. So basicly my TV and PS3 are top of the line technology, but my surround sound system is 2 years old and doesnt have the modern technology capability

Tom,
Do i sense that 509 will be coming out with HD film this year?

all good points x-guy. i know i was waiting to see who would win the blu-ray VS HD-DVD battle and now that blu-ray has won...i'm ramping up on the burner side of things. most of the sled film guys i know are shooting in HD already this season but the costs of duplicating blu-ray and regular DVDs is gonna sting some of the guys. at then end of the day, we're all going to have to make an educated guess as to how many BRs and how many DVDs to duplicate. i think by next year, we'll have a better handle on it.

jeff

Gonna have to make an educated guess on how many to dupe.
I will be buying less videos this year because the cost of living is way up. Anywany .... I think video sales will be down for 3 reasons:

1: Cost of living , inflation gas is expensive.
2: Seen one seen them alll. For me I still watch a few over and over again and put the rest aside. Why ... the others are not "complete" in their presentation or it is like bubble gum. After chewing on it a while the flavor and texture changes.
3:AWESOME snow this year ... and have lots of memories to hold onto till next season.

interesting stuff, I heard something about CBC HD upconverting their high def somehow, hockey games were not originally being filmed in HD, only 480p, they were piped into a truck which upconverted it into HD, and then broadcast to the rest of the country, and there is a clear difference between lets say a game on NBC high def, and CBC high def, CBC looks terrible, I was curious about this and which way the independant production companies would go, good on you for biting the bullet, and doing it the expensive way, I think its worth it in the end, the end product looks so much better, any ideas what blu ray burners are running these days?

I just went out and bought a new 1080p set a few months ago to get the most out of blu ray, so I am hoping more and more will be broadcast in 1080p, but it looks like 1080i and 720p will be the dominant ones, I do not notice a difference between the 2 1080i and 720p personally, in high movement situations, I find the progressive to be a little cleaner, but you really have to look hard, but I do notice the difference on the 1080p, would be nice if that was the standard, but I am sure there would be alot of older 1080i/720p HD owners not to happy with that.

In the end, snowmobile videos will be on blu-ray, and thats what we all wanted :)

phatty, sounds like you have a very similar setup as mine, unfortuneatly with my also outdated audio system, it was one of those home theatre in a box deals, good sound, but unfortunatly it only has one optical port, so I have to decide if I want 5.1 on my satellite, or 5.1 on my ps3, thats why I was curious as to the HDMI, since I can run HDMI to my ps3, and optical to my satellite reciever, hopefully anyways, need to hurry up and finish buying the pieces to my new home theatre, between this and sleds, I am broke all year haha. Nice TV btw, I think samsung has the nicest tv's on the market

thats whats so nice about my digital audio out off the TV. I run everything into my TV - HDMI from PS3,xbox 360, and dish, standard white/red from the wii, regular DVD player, and computer and then my surround system plays whatever audio the tv puts out according to the selection input on the tv. I never have to switch the surround system input, its a good system! Yea my TV is unbelievable... the masters was truly amazing this year...

amen don...that is why Team Summit Productions is making Elevation 4 available as a free download on our website this season. you won't get all the cool bonus feature stuff that will be on the dvd but it will be a cheap option for those sledheads effected by the crappy economy.

also...we will be doing our very popular pre-order contest again. everyone who pre-orders the vid will be eligible for the all-expense paid trip to cali to ride/film with us next season. we just had last year's winner out for this past weekend and that kid got an eyeful! we have a new film coming out next year that will be very different from the ELEVATION movies.

and last, we will be lowering the price of the dvd this year to $20.00 to help sledders out during this rough economy. it may not seem like much but i think its the right thing to do.

sounds like that setup works pretty sweet, I broke down and bought a harmony remote after my wife damn near killed me after she missed her favorite program because she couldnt figure out all the equipment hehe

Have any of you film guys thought about offering a direct download service off your website? anyone who buys the DVD version can download the HD version off your website or something like that for free? Or are the files too large? Just seems like it would skirt the high blu ray production cost.

thats exactly what jlowe is going to do, put the high res on the computer for download and still sell a regular dvd...

i have 2 remotes. the older surround sound system cant be picked up by the universal remote. maybe jlowe is right i do need an upgrade!!!

Hmmmmm....possibly ;) It was shot 100% in 1080i

Is there any way you can hook the PS3 into your surround system? I was thinking of getting a blue ray player, or the PS3. Just wanted to be able to listen to it in surround sound.

Yes, if you're running it through an A/V receiver.

I too would buy every blu-ray video available! Put me on the pre-sale lists.

if you havnt already, try a harmony remote, best purchase I ever made, hook it up to your computer, put in what equiptment you have, what video/audio channels they are on, what aspect you watch it in, and it sets everything up for you, all you gotta do is press one of the pre-set buttons "watch TV", "Watch DVD" or "listen to music" and it switches it all over automatically, the supported equiptment list is unreal, I would bet your system would be supported, but they ain't cheap.

I am pretty damn happy to hear there will be a downloadable version, I think thats the way I will probly go, I got too many DVD's laying around already.
