big tank-does stock fuel gauge work

I think that fAStener would help a lot. The tank is very nice, but it doesn't work with a mcx turbo unless you melt and push it in around the charge tube. also my tank would not go far enough forward for seat bolts, it hits the steering loop. this tank is very tight, sending unit looks to be pushed in touching the frame when installed in as far as possiable (possiable short after some use). I think i will get the new batch when available

Well we need it to fit the MCX sleds....I cant beleive they didnt consider that when designing the tank?? I thought for sure colorado yamaha had a proto tank to try with his MCX kit?? Am I wrong here?? I know from a reliable source that 250 MCX Nytro kits have been pumped out the door of wich 200 are in North America....thats alot of tanks.....and if you dont think you need the extra capacity your not ridin near hadr enough:face-icon-small-win

What has Seth had to say about this issue?? Sure glad I waitied.

For you guys complaining about fit and finish, why don't you call Yamaha and ask to talk to the genuis who came up with the 7.4 gallon tank in the first place? I've personally seen the trail tank mounted up in person and I thought it was pretty clean, it's not OEM perfect, but completely functional and definitely better than the other options out there. The Yamaha saddle bag gas cans are a joke and I've seen a Tour Buddy get melted in an XC race application.

I should have my Trail Tank at the end of the week. I've never been able to get over 100 miles out of my stock tank. In the mountains, the stock tank range is even further reduced.

I can burn my stock tank in 60km with turbo. Thats at a mountain with no big road ride in. When spooled this machine burns gas very fast. Seth has been great to deal with. Said he would return my money on purchase. I will reorder when he works this out. I do think this is still the best tank out there for fit and finish. Thistle-doo, I would wait and order this tank when fixed shouldn't be long. Seth was not expecting this problem he seems like a stand up guy to me who wants to make a good product, just tough when all these machines are diffrent. Gotta give him credit though no one else stood up to try and provide us with a better tank.

Sorry folks. My tank made for the Boondocker turbo does not have a provision for the sending unit. And it dont fit near as well as that Trail Tank,
However, we can go just as far as an apex with both under boost:face-icon-small-coo

I ordered five of these tanks from Seth Which were going to be shipped last week. He personally phoned me about the clearance issue on the charge tube. He is going to make these fit right even if it takes retooling. He was very upfront & honest about his product. Something you can't say for many aftermarket companies. When he told me about the clearance issue I wonder if it is all of the MCX turbos or only the early build ones. I have put together a few of these kits & the earlier charge tube fit different than the later kits. He is still sending me one tank to start with which we will try on a later build. When you build something aftermarket to fit something aftermarket it is very hard to get consistency.

Trail Tank uses the stock sender as stated above. It simply reads full for a longer period of time. Just installed one and fit is great.

How about a pic of the right hand side with the plastic???

I have my tank on now, and my seat seems to be snugged right up against the tank...but am thinking about leaving the white plastic piece off mine...will post pics later...

new tank

new tank is on....only issues with install...the STUPID gaskets on the fuel gauge sensor, and the Fuel pump....froze both of them, and that worked well for the fuel pump gasket, but the fuel sensor gasket did not work worth a crap so, I had to just get a new one...

but other than that, only advice would be, that you push really hard (making sure the cables are not in the way) when initially seating the tank and bolting it in, that let me put the seat on VERY smoothly, and get a little tighter tolerance on the tank and the seat...is still not perfect looking but once I paint the top white plastic, you will not even know this is not a stock tank...

nice job Trail Tank, very good product, cannot wait to see how much fuel I have left after a hard day of riding tomorrow...one foot of fresh powder forecasted for tonight!!!!

Here are some pics...

I have the trail tank on my mcx nytro...def tight around the charge tube(slight mod to the tube and hoseclamp) First time out ran out of fuel with 2 bars on gauge..thought I had done something wrong drained tank and looked inside the fuel pump area and saw gauge hanging up a little so worked it until it would rest very close to the bottom of tank and the light came on..Dosen't read totally full but that is much better than the alternative. In deep deep snow in revy I got 125 ks on by the time back to the truck(with only 1/2 gallon added) Considering how hard we were riding the extra mileage is well worth any hassles fit on the left side is great the right side is off slightly but I would get this again in a heartbeat................02

I'm in the process of putting mine on right now. Has anyone added a heat shield or heat reflective tape to the bottom of their tanks? The directions don't mention doing anything thing like it and over on TY, Seth said he wasn't able to find out from Yamaha where they source their heat shield tape from. I'm assuming it will be fine but I'm nervous.

I checked into it and ended up transferring the stock tank's heat shield material over to my new tank. I used heat reflective tape to cover up seams and minor tears since the new tank is larger and shaped slightly different than stock.

I was amazed by how quickly the stock gaskets expanded. I thought I could do an amazingly quick, Indian Jones, Raiders of the Lost Ark type switch from tank to tank but wasn't even close to fast enough. My dealer said you can actually watch the gaskets grow when air hits them. Now both gaskets are in the freezer, we'll see if a couple hours is long enough to shrink them down.

I purchased some 3m spray stickum stuff, and then took the stock heat shield stuff off the stock tank...and put that on...similar to what you did...and yes, those gaskets are incredible!!!!

but it is ALL worth it!!! had 62.3 miles on yesterday, and had three bars left on the gauge when I got back to the truck!!!!

This tank rocks!!

Just got back from Yammafest in Revy...on Friday, rode back in to Turtle and put on some serious miles in deep snow. On the boost all day. Put in my extra 2 gallons, and still got back to the trailer with 3 bars.

Thanks Seth!! Even with the tight fit, I would definitely buy this again.

Guys when you swap the fuel sender make sure you install it the same as it came out of the stock tank. The fuel gauge should simply read full longer when installed correctly.

I need to check my wiring loom and vent line because I can't get my seat to line up. My dealer said because of the tight clearances, the loom and vent line can prevent the tank from going forward far enough. Here is a link to my install http://www.ty4stroke.com/viewtopic.php?t=57987

Yeah, check these two lines and ensure they are not tweaked behind the tank, or it wont go in well...once they are inline, the tank will snuggle right into spot and you will have no issues...

Used your pic to show it...Also, looks like you did not put the cap gasket back on the neck of the tank?
