Big Horns

I wouldn't say it is good. If you are within a couple hours its rideable. There are pockets of good snow followed by dirt. Just have to go look for the pockets. South of burgess has been best so far.

If they get two feet, it will be very very good.

We are driving 11 from Iowa, I know it's not going to be the best conditions but it's better than sitting home another damn week staring at the walls. I find myself caring less each year about snowmobiling, it's becoming too much hassle to get trips lined up with guys starting families and having kids. Plus the cost is getting past the point of ridiculous. So we have to take whatever snow conditions we find because we can't storm chase like we used to. I am a diehard guy, but these last couple years have we questioning whether all the work and expense is worth the effort to ride. I have the money and still am thinking the two sleds I have now might be my last. One good snow year will probably change that but right now that is how I feel.

I hear ya orange. As a college kid I can only go riding During christmas vacation, presidents weekend, and spring break. The past two years I haven't gone out over christmas cuz the snow wasn't there. I am still unsure if I will get out presidents weekend. I guess its better these poor snow years are happening during my college years though, cuz I can't get out there anyway. Still, it sucks that my 5g sled has been collecting so much dust...

You're thinking backwards here!

When I was in college, we made it out West (I live in Iowa) 4 or 5 times a year. Now that everybody has jobs and families, we're lucky to make it out once a year.

Enjoy the college years while you can. You have no idea how much FREE time you really have right now.

Just had a group of buddies get back on Sunday from the Horns and said it sucked.

I would also agree on the college issue, now's the time to get out there as much as you can, unless your looking for a perfect attendance record.

deerhaven

We have stayed there on and off over the past 15 years, or we stayed at meadowlark just down the road, The southern bighorns has nice offtrail and plenty of areas to get yourself lost or stuck, ,Not much for avalanche areas in southern bighorns, but some pretty good climbs if u come from flatland area. The area doesnt have any nightlife other than deerhaven bar You need to make your own fun, We always like going there because its not as crazey as the northern horns, lots less people by deerhaven area, can be lots of untracted powder to ride, we find new places to explore every time we go out there.. If u want a place thats quite and low key, this is your place. if u want night life and partying go to northern horns. You will have fun where ever u go in da horns. :face-icon-small-coo

Orange2 I hear ya. My group used to watch the forcast and be sitting it town when it hit(WY,MT,ID) anywhere they were predicting a big dump. We had some unbelivable trips and now those storm chasing trips are getting fewer and farther between. Now some of the guys have to plan 3 months in advance and it is just a battle to get a trip lined up then we get out there and end up riding crap. But at the same time I do realize we were just real spoiled before. You young guys enjoy it now it only gets worse!

Don't give up! Some of our best riding has been after a lot of people hang it up for the year. I know it's hard to keep in the mind set when you're thinking about mowing the lawn but the Horns usually get big spring dumps thru May.

bighorns

We have been to the southern horns in mid april and have had excellent riding, kind of cool that time of year, leave home and grass is green go riding for 4 days and come home and mow lawn, my favorite time to ride mountains late winter early spring.

We're in the same boat as others, we pick the date two months in advance and take the conditions we get. 3 years ago, everyone said the snow sucked and not to bother coming. It was a low snow year, but we ended up finding lots of untracked areas. Then last year we ended up hitting the good dumping end of February. Us Midwesterners just need to make due with what we're given I guess. 2/20 can't come soon enough!

probably weren't in pharmacy school though huh? :face-icon-small-win

everybody seems to be so critical of the Horns every year. Just like last year, I remember people posting about how awful the conditions were in the beginning of Feb...yadda yadda yadda. Long story short, I went up there with some buddies anyway, and we found MANY untouched areas of wasit deep powder. Just all depends on where you decide to go, and how hard you look.

I cannot wait to head back out in less than a month. They have plenty more snow than here, I garontee that
