Best place in CO to ride?

Thinking about a trip to Colorado for something new. We normally ride the Snowies, have ridden Togwotee. We like to ride places with a fair amount of open meadows, deep powder and good off-trail riding. Not much for beating down a trail through the trees. Any advice? We live in Nebraska so probably the further east the better as long as it's not so close to Denver that it's packed with people. Thanks for the help

I think it's called the Snowies ... Snowy Range, WY actually ...Apparently you've been there already... I could have sworn that the 10 million greenies there every weekend couldn't possibly be wrong :D

But I digress, I go to RE all the time to ride, so I'm just being a hippocrit .... but since I'm from Wyoming, its perfectly acceptable for me to be that way ....LOL :)

So far this season, you just have to follow the snow. It's a crap shoot since the storm tracks are so varied. They go South, they stay West, they come over the North 1/4 of the State or just flat out miss the mountains altogether.

While the mountains are hurting for snow the metro area is on pace to set a record in snowfall.

Just watch the weather and see where it goes.

Agreed, a month ago, the South had snow, this week, up North was the place to be.

Try Thunder Mountain Lodge on the Grand Mesa in western Colorado. Well worth the drive. www.thundermountainlodge.net. I have been there twice this year and had a great time. Check to see where the storms are hitting and head to the place that has the snow. Thunder Mountain has a great base, so when more snow arrives, it will be great. Avoid Vail Pass, very little snow.

From what I heard, the Mesa wasn't that great last weekend. Things had settled and the land mines were showing again.

The Mesa is getting "thin" again, that's for sure. East of Hunter Reservoir and Plexi Glass still has some snow that is not bad. We went through Hidden Valley Saturday and it was an adventure to say the least. It needs another 6-7 feet before it is any fun. Snow dance everybody!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thats for sure!! even the locals have sworn off that place. its just a weird year,......it hasn't snowed for 5 weeks around here...last storm pounded RE, and the snowies...

5 weeks is a stupid long time for no freshies.

thin thin thin

It's thin everywhere right now, especially from the Mesa and anywhere south. Hopefully this next storm for next week will be a gooder. Sounds like it might be....dancing, dancing. Who am I kidding, I'm going up both days this weekend no matter what!

I rode with a group from WI on the Grand Mesa on Monday and it is a little tricky for this time of year but we were out all day and found plenty of areas with untracked snow. You had to search for it but it is out there. Thank goodness the Mesa is the huge size it is. We need snow like everyone else!!!
Group was here from MN this week and also found snow but they were very familiar with the area and knew of quite a few hidey holes to ride. It looks like everybody needs snow right now. It will come and the Grand Mesa will be the place to ride then as our base is great.

Very true Mark, I have NEVER not been able to find untracked snow. There is gobs and gobs of it. You don't even have to get far from the lodge or any trail to find it. See you this weekend, hopefully I'll be up both days. I'll stop by and say hi for sure.
