best hd camcorder? looking to get a good one

I talked to my old photography teacher and he told me that he likes the mini discs but i don't want to hassle with that. I think i will just buy that cannon i posted before. I am planning on just buying 2-3 batts for it and a good tripod and we are going to make a short 30 min riding video next year just to record the insane terrain we have around hear that no one knows about. Everyone goes to cooke and leave all the powder untracked hear! Also, i have a $100 bet with my friend that i can do a back flip by jan and if I stick it hten he has to hit it, so if im going to try i at least want to have some good footage of it!

I am technically illiterate (hell I am almost illiterate period!) so could some one tell me what would be the best cannon for me? It would be GREATLY appreciated!

I have that camera, one step up. Awesome piece of equipment. I am not sure what the difference is between the 20 I have and the 10 you posted. I got the 20 from tristatecamera.com I have bought 3 higher end prosumer cameras from them. Good place to deal with and best non BS pricing.

I would recommend the Canon HV30. As several other people have stated, you always have a backup with tape. The HDV (tape) camcorders actually shoot better footage than the camcorders that record to SD card or a hard drive because of the way the files are compressed. This will probably change soon, but for now I would stick with the HDV cameras. Tape also seems to hold up better in cold weather.

do you guys shoot at all with the HV30 or do you use bigger and better ? can you change lenses on the hv30 so you can go to a bigger zoom or a wide angle if needed?

What the hell hapened to you coming to cooke? What is your old camera and how much you want for it?

Lefty-

You can put a wide angle or telephoto lens on the hv30. Yes, I did a lot of shooting with the hv30. If you know what you're doing, in good light cameras like the hv30 will shoot footage that is comparable to much more expensive cameras and better than the 2k+ cameras from just a couple years ago. When you move into the higher price ranges you are paying for a lot of manual features that you will never need for snowmobiling. The size/weight of the hv30 is also ideal for snowmobiling. When we are out filming we are also riding hard all day so I don't want to have a huge camera on my back or on the back of the sled.

If you want to capture amazing footage, my number one recommendation is to use a tripod with a fluid head. This is especially critical with hd cameras, as the higher quality makes shaking much more noticeable and it is important to get a crisp focus. Check out the Bogen 701 tripod head, it is probably one of the lightest tripod heads and works well with small hd camcorders.

So what’s the difference in the 10,20,and 30? Which one is the best for sleding? And i really don't want to have to deal with the mini discs.

fathers day

Well my kids got me my first camcorder today, it is a Sony DCR SX40, have no idea how to work it yet but I am super excited to start recording dance, soccer, softball games......I am pretty lucky.
