Beacon Law

I called up to Togwotee today to check on my reservations, AND they told me that I have to use a Beacon if I go sledding off the trails that its a new law in WYoming.
I have one that I bought last year and hope and pray I never have to put it to use.
But has anyone else heard about that new law?

Never heard of it but what a great idea. Maybe that will help stop the idiots that don't have one when they go into the hills. Or maybe they need to have a no beacon day and all those people can go ride together and I can stay at home and watch the destruction.

thats retarted. I agree everyone should were one, But a law requiring it. Stupid. Next we will all be required to wear ABS, TekVest, Where would it stop

TOG had that law last year if you rented a sled huh interesting to see when we go in january it really dont matter anyway I have a beacon

Yea, that's how I feel... if someone doesn't want to wear one, and doesn't mind becoming a statistic... more power to them I suppose. I won't be riding with them.

If so I would like to know how they are going to inforce it?
That too. Who's paying for enforcement?

Laws and rules and restrictions always are like that...they start and never stop.

Mind you I wear a beacon, but making it a law...is stupid. Laws are for stupid people. If this is a way to weed out the stupid people, well, so be it.
As rude and as harsh as it may sound...I wouldn't mind more things working out that way in this day and age.

And I'm not saying I'm not an idiot, or reckless, or make bad choices on occasion. But if I have to pay for it, thats the price I pay for doing such things.

Unfortunately common sense is so rare, or just completely and utterly disreguarded now days.

it's not a law but, the lodge requires if you ride offtrail with their guides you wear one or you dont go. liability issue for the lodge.

sue happy world, we did it to ourselves with all the stuid law suits for common sense crap like, spilling hot coffee in your own lap, and i'm fat from fast food resturants. yeah, thats someone elses fault and they should pay. give me a break! ski

The problem that nobody seems to get is if you don't know how to use a beacon they can be more of a problem then a life saver. The reason I say that if they aren't all turned on to search then you will get false readings. You have to learn how to use the arc to find someone the quickest way.

Botom line everyone take a class please and learn how to do a group search, if could be a life saver. A person needs to take one every year and practice on the hill. Be safe folks...............

Well I guess I go buy a beacon. Always wanted to, it was just one of those things that I forget about till I am going down the trail. This year though I think we are getting our kids each a sled and a terrible thought came into my head. If one of my kids or my wife were to get buried in an avy and I didnt spend a measly $300 (maybe less? dunno how much they are) to have a much better chance of saving them.......I would never forgive myself.

Anybody up for a doing a mass Snowest buy and see if we could pick some beacons up for a good buy? Sign me up for 4 of em.

Whats next? next thing you know you will be required to wear a seat belt in you own car.

Or the government will make a law to require a 3rd brake light mounted in the center and hire than the other 2.

Or how about a bag folded up and mounted inside a steering wheel that quickly fills with air in a wreck so your face does't kiss the horn button.

Or we could ***** about other stupid laws like the speed limit, passing on the left, ...........

Buy a beacon and ride.

If a guy doesn't want to wear a beacon to be rescued, that should be his privilage. But at least wear one for recovery. Your family might want the body back.

This is correct. I stay at Tog Lodge for a week in late January, for the last several years.
Our group tour host (Brian Nelson from MN) is a licensed guide in MT, and WY.
The groups he leads on a ride all must wear a beacon. And yes, they do rent them as well. $5.00/day, if memory is correct.

Me? Because of my disability, lack of strength on my left arm I don't use a beacon.(after a stupid accident in '02... long story) I don't ride off the Tog trail system, although it's sure tempting. I just enjoy being out in such spectacular scenery, and sometimes stop to watch others playing on a slope.

Man Law: Mandatory that you and everyone you ride with wears a beacon and be proficient in its use so they can find you
A few years back we had some non residents think that 15.00 a day rent on beacons was to much money. Two out of the group went home in body bags.
