My son just bought a 2004 Summitx that had been run last season with carb boots that were this bad with no burn down!!

I hear ya!!! Just amazed that there were no problems, checked out engine thoroughly, and it looks OK

i had an 04 that did the same thing last year. noticed it when i was out west and babied most of the week just waiting for a burn down but never happened. the cages arn't cheap, $75 a piece i think

WOW I am suprized that the thing is still running. That is the worst boot pic yet!! How did it idle? My idling is higher, so I have a suspicion it got worse.
Mine are showing signs of wear, and I am gonna replace them with the all aluminum Boyesen Rage Cage. I saw them for around 250$

How did it idle?

Didn't idle bad at all, we only had it running in warm (60 -70) temps tho.

Replacing them with the '07 boots. Found 'em for $56.00 each.

I would take a look at the jugs and pistons to make sure there is no scarring. Have you checked the compression yet??

Looks good!

Checked the pistons from intake and exhaust sides, look fine. Compression is 150 @ 1200 feet. Someone:D dodged a bullet!

I've got a buddy who has a set of V-Force's that look worse than that and he did not have a burn down either. It is amazing that his engine is still running. There must be something going on with the gas these days that is eating the rubber. I don't know! Is V-Force going to warranty them?

I have seen a couple posts on here concerning the V-force reeds/reed cages. From what I saw there is some sort of warranty deal there.

Mine burnt down in mid March doo to a ripped boot. It ran a little funny - but I just had the whole thing apart recently and the boot looked funny - but wasn't ripped. ??? I thought that it was in the carb and I lived with it since it cleaned out quickly enough.

Well ... -20C and a 300# sleigh on behind on a motor that was already leaned out didn't add up too well. :o

Mine was ripped acrost the top and a bit of sillycone gooped on would'a saved the day ... if I had only taken the time to finger it out. :(

Not to be outdone tho - a chumm - also with a heavy sleigh on behind tied his up only a few hrs later - and his was 100% stock!

Next time we hook up to heavy sleighs in cold weather - I will raise the needles! The only motor from that ride still together was 100% fresh before the ride. LOL!

BTW - I thought that V-Force WAS the fix! No?

V-force I, and II had thier problems. The V-force III reeds are supposed to be much better against deterioration.
I saw that mine had some small breaks along the edge, no where near as bad to cause a leak, but to prevent it from getting worse, I tried, Epoxy, and RTV silicone. Nothing seemed to bond to the rubber. It seems that the metal underneith the rubber breaks down and separates from the rubber.

Problem will be solved with the Rad valve.

booties

BRP has updated the rubber on the new ones
from what i have heard, you actually LOSE HP with aftermarket reeds like Boysen & VF III's
i think BJ had a post of a dyno that showed this........
there are quite a few ways you can spend $250 and put ur $$ to something more useful

i replaced my PTO side boot b/f going to Fernie last march
sled ran a little funny out there & actually wouldnt start
but my air box ended up slipping off the carb and was like that for most of the day!!!
we fixed and made er out ok

well i have recently put a whole new top end in
see pics below of the boot i pulled from the mag side and the piston
i was another pull away from a burn down i am sure
i also shoved a chunk of foam (the crap i pulled outta the bulk head)
and put it between the airbox and gas tank
this is a major cause of carb boot tear w the airbox rattling around in there

all this should fix the issue

you got lucky dude!!

Rad valve?

I have seen my fair share of the delamination on the reed side of the boot, but I never had heard of the boots ripping and hadn't actually taken that into consideration. :o

This has nothing to do with Moto tassinari or V force. !

The pictures and problems with delaminting BOOTS is with BRP.
No fix has been provided since 2001 from BRP.

The boots from V force are NOT falling apart, only yhe stock boot is.
The pictures above are of Rimoldi reeds that come stock in the HO 800

V froce boots ARE the solution for turbo owners, they don't fail like the poor quality oem BRP boot.

I SAYS PARDON??

I put a set of V-force III's on my '01 ZX way back when. I had nothing but problems with them, and 4 months later the boots had more cracks then a room full of plumbers. Called Moto Tasssinari direct in California to get a set of replacement boots and was told I'd have to buy the ENTIRE reed assembly all over again. Seems to me that BRP and Moto Tasianri took the same page out of the book of "screwing over the consumer". Just my 2 cents

Well - we all screw up occassionally.

How often does a bad set come through from the aftermarket? Are they USUALLY better than the BRP ones?

If you have a set of Boeysen rad valves / rage cage, keep an eye on your boots that connect between the cage and carbs. I had a set of mine go bad last season with less than 500 miles. I called them and explained my problem and they stated that they were having some deterioration problems associated with the rubber boots from a vendor. The problem has since been corrected and they sent me a set of new boots free of charge to replace the old defective ones. Fantastic product, great company service! You will not be disappointed.
