Avy Beacons

Which beacon is the one to have? We have always just borrowed peoples when we go to the mountains but we're going to buy two before we head to Colorado at the end of the month. I am just looking for some insight as to which beacon is most popular, which one everyone uses?
Thanks!!

That question is *kind of* like which oil to use, or which brand of sled. Almost...as there are a lot of personal preferences.

I personally have a Pulse. For me, I loved all of it's features, but it is a more expensive beacon. I also have a Tracker (use that in a spare pack we keep).

I haven't used the Tracker 2, but had heard many good reviews on them. I am a fan of the 3 antennae beacons.

For Independent reviews this website is a good one: http://beaconreviews.com/transceivers/

SnowBigDeal is a great one to ask questions of, and help steer you in the right direction to find what would work for you taking all things into consideration, including budget. He's very helpful, and great customer service.

Ultimately, the best beacon is the one you take the time to learn well (including reading the manual), and practice with. :)

I agree with Catwoman, the one you practice with is the best one to have. The most popular beacon out there is the BCA Tracker. However, if you are looking for the newest technology, I would highly recommend a 3-antennae beacon. You can't go wrong with the Pieps DSP, Mammut Pulse, or BCA Tracker 2.

Snowbigdeal and catwoman are right, practice, practice, practice...when you are looking make sure you take a look at the Ortovox S1 and 3+.
As your observation and rescue skills progress you will appreciate some of the features of the S1.

Don't forget: A long, strong, high quality probe with a simple locking mechanism and a stout shovel are VERY important as well. Stay clear of probes that ride in a shovel handle...too flimsy and short.
