AVALANCHE it montana, small

Picture it this way, if you would have got bucked off your sled before getting to that point, would you have been knocked flat and bowled over in heavy snow? Most likely. Thank God that it didn't go down like that or the outcome might have been different!

Sheesh - That is spoky for sure - especially since the pics don't appear to show much of a slope/hill at all!?!

please fill us in a bit.
recent weather, slope angle, exposure, elevation and most of all for my mind,
what was your avy forcast for the day this happened?

thanks, glad you are here to answer these.

We were up there yesterday too...saw three natural slides...heard one of them thump, and came upon it as the snow was settling...

they were all dropping on North and or NorthEast facing slopes...and yes it was triggered as the day warmed...

Here is a pic of one just a ridge over...Just after this pic we went up the ridge to out immediate right...followed the ridge line above this slide, dropped into another play area, and when we cam back the area in the foreground of this image had dropped...

Conditions were, new snow on top of faceted snow, had pretty thick hoars frost layer about 18" down, and right below the hoars frost was a sheet layer...making for perfect conditions for slides...but this side of the mountain gets lots of sun, and that with the new snow, made for really bad conditions yesterday...

Avy Myth busters...slides were happening in treed areas...

if you "ride a couple a year" as was stated, it truly is only a matter of time...

not worth it to me, call me a weenie all you want...shoot red apples my way, but if we dont start calling out this behavior as less than wise, well it wil continue...

I sincerely hope that you do not have a wife and children.

I feel bad for your mom and dad.

And for your riding buddies that will be there to pick up the mess when "the wave" wins.

My heart aches reading your posts in this thread! :brokenheart:

PLEASE tell me I'm reading it all wrong.............

BTW, if trees are far enough apart for a sled to ride through it isn't thick enough to keep an avy from sliding.
