Avalanche Flotation Device tested in BC

We are testing our own device that we call the Avi-Vest. It is not on the market yet.

We floated a 650 pound Polaris snowmobile in a Nevada avalanche using a 20 cubic foot lift bag (1000 liters?), but our dummies only weigh about 170 pounds.

It took over 400 pounds of dead weight to sink one of these airbags in a lake, so we think this would bring a 300 pound person close to the surface.

Is it possible to do a test with the pack NOT activated before the slide hits? Lets say within the first 100' or so? The reason I ask is what if the sledder is under his sled when the avalanche starts or, some how can not get to the pull cord. Would like to see if the subject would float to the surface once buried in the snow. NOT being negative here test test test thats what I do.

Just curious, but what's the cost on these things.... I think that's the biggest factor to them right now. Data's there proving they work, but goddamn they're spendy :(

Awesome work. Good to see they're working out...

just the question I was going to ask. What's the price going to be like? I wish someone would make them a little more affordable. That's the main factor why I don't have one, it isn't I don't want to spend the money, it's more I don't have that much I can drop on a vest... so I ride vest-less :(

I do not want to pee on anyones parade here but telling me that it would bring 300 lbs close to the surface is not exactly what I need to hear. PLEEEAAASSSEEEE test these things out with some larger dummies. I have multiple riding buddies 250-300 and some weigh more than that. I can see it now, me telling my wife that the researchers said the bag should work on my big *ss and get me close to the surface. The next thing out of her mouth would be,"give me the keys to your truck you idiot your not going into the mountains".

Come to think of it I have only one riding buddy that weighs close to 170 lbs. Then I get to add pack and clothes weight. Test these things out with real world weights. It's not that I do not appreciate your effort but please make it count for the majority of people out there not the minority. I would say that most riders weigh about 200-250 fully geared up.

thx

I too would be interested in deploying the "vest" DURING the avalanche as opposed to before it is awakened.

Think about it...after you get your butt hole puckered back up from the initial shock you will more than likely be in when one of these MONSTERS breaks loose...will a person have time to have the bag FULLY deployed prior to being overtaken by the MONSTER...

Again, could you test somehow with the bag not deployed prior to the MONSTER awakening???

Thanks!!!

I must say,its good to see they are still testing the ABS stuff.Lets all remember what we spend on our sled(wife reminds me regularly $$$),so that being said,I believe the grand spent on the ABS,pulse or other airbags is money well spent....specially if I never have to us it.Just use your head and play safe,NONE of us are invinciable reguardless of what were wearing or our training. No ones family deserves a loss of a loved one doing what we love, be smart and educate & help each other......God bless the family's of the lost ones this year!

Here's another test..............
