Av gas or Race gas

Which is better for our turbos, I have been told that Av gas is "too dry". Race gas is the only thing I have run 50/50 with pump premium.
Gotta like the smell!

Bs ....I've been running straight Avgas for 4 years in turbo sled's NO engine failures . (up to 20 psi) ( Hey moderators could we sticky one of these avgas threads ? They tend to come up at least once every 3-4 weeks . LoL !
 
I have been running straight 100LL for a couple years with no problems on my TRX-1. Alot cheaper than race gas.
 
Yep its too dry. It'll dry right up in the exhaust.....

I would just continue to run race gas. If you like the smell, I mean, what else really matters? :p

Plus, something is driving up the cost of Avgas,and I doubt all of us that run it would mind it going down. That is not going to happen if everyone uses it.:confused:
 
dont know about the dry thing, but the big advantage of race fuel is it burns far cooler, completely different burning characteristics, av gas burns very hot, av gas works fine, with boost your trying to avoid detonation which av gas will help, as long as your not lean, my best guess is that you'll probably be allright, but melted pistons are no fun either, just a little more peace of mind running the proper stuff, i look at it this way, was running a 2-strok with nos, running premium, usually with another jug of octane boost, burning about 30$ a day of ves oil, running race fuel for the few tanks a guy puts through in a year doesn't add up to much compared to the expensive sleds, gas to get to the mountains, hotels, meals, tracks, drivers, suspension, blowers, turbos, seats, guages, exhaust, ski's, whats another 20$ a day in gas?
 
The one thing i heard from the place i get 100LL is that i burns slower. If its true why is that?
 
ask any fuel guru on what to run in a sled they will tell you that running av gas in a sled is not what its made for. a sled isnt a plane and av gas is made for really high elevations takes longer to burn and is known for vapor locking if you read up on it you will find out that it is not the fuel you should run in a sled and has no benefits over c12 or basically any race gas....:beer;
 
No one is trying to compare 110 or 112 octane race fuel to 100LL octane wise. It's the numb nutters that come up with this "too dry" schtick that's way out to lunch. If you don't need 110 but need more than pump gas can offer, 100LL isn't a bad choice. Readily available and a lot cheaper.

Just so that all of you know avgas is considered a dry fuel which means that their are not the lubrication properties of regular petroleum fuels! It also is designed to run in extremely high elevations(like 30,000ft+), where the air is very thin, some of you should read a book! And ya there are people out there who run it with no problems but there are still people who have problems with it as well!!! And i think you need to ask yourself do you want to be one of those times or just do it right and run the real stuff! Go big or go home, right? :eek:

WoW that is a high flying Cesna. I sure hope they put race gas in it when they are doing stunts at our local airport at 5,000ft. Just might crash and burn when the Cly dry up and crack.
 
Av Gas uses lead = bad for the environment and the areas that we are all heading out to, ie. it can end up in the snow, in the snow melt, in the rivers; lakes and the fish that we spend our summers chasing. Normal gas that you buy at the pump, and race gas has additives to replace the lubrication properties of the lead that used to be in the pump gas.

Sorry for sounding like an environmentalist... a friend was just diagnosed with Mercury poisoning from eating too much Tuna at sushi... so been looking at the food chain a little bit more lately.
 
30,000' lmao! Dont most PLANES have a ceiling of like 14,000'? Sound familiar?

Avgas is so dry, I just filled up my barrel a week ago, and its DRY!!!!

HUH? Yes Avgas has lead in it, hence the name 100 LOW LEAD. But race gas has alot of lead in it. Do you really think the very small percentage of leaded fuel snowmobilers use makes any noticable difference? Do you know how much fuel is burned a day in planes all over the world? I bet a couple more cups than sleds......:confused:

Sorry to hear about your friend, but the majority of race fuel being used right now is leaded. Unleaded 110 is way more money yet.
