Auto dealers please..How to-on buying...

Was at some dealerships today in Alberta,,,,Seriously, "a discount of $600 on a $33,000 vehicle is all we can do"???? I thought there were big savings etc...How do I "negotiate" with these salesmen????

Tell him what you'll do and back it up with a little research (other offers). But, more than anything, if he's trying to rip you off already, when he should be motivated to please you, then what's going to happen down the road when you need something done that doesn't benefit him (breakdown)? Go somewhere else...there are plenty of hungry dealers out there.

Exactly what these other guys have said. Even if you think it's the best deal your gonna get, I would still walk. You never know what they will give into to make the sale. Remember you can always go back.

Treat them the same way you want them to treat you. Unless you get and azzhole salesman/dealer, in that case you should walk no matter what anyway. I don't know of any vehicles out there that dealers can't keep on their lots. I always stand by the 2 most important rules when buying a car/truck. #1 when in doubt walk off. #2 Never forget rule number 1!!!! It's also a good idea to do your research. The more you know about their business the better your chances.

It's as much a game to them as it is to you. There job is to make the sale for as much as possible. Your job is to pay as little as possible. Nothing personal just business.

Is it already a discounted price or full sticker? Also what make and model? Too many variables here

Being a pretty new model they may not be willing to deal.

We bought an Infiniti EX35 (very similar, and we love it) last year right before X-Mas. It was brand spanking new at the time and they were not willing to budge on the EX, but I got them to move on the trade a bit.

2009 Nissan Rogue SL AWD Premium package, no leather. MSRP $32,995.......Cash deal....They will knock off $600.
Do they still have new 08's on the lot that have more cashback? If so, that's probably your problem. If not, how much more discount are you expecting? If another thousand would do it for you, go in and make an offer. If you just floated in and asked "what's your best price?" an they told you $600 off, they may be willing to go further. Hard to know if people are serious when they ask that question....offers work much better.

Cash or finance often doesn't mean anything unless there's a manufacturer finance deal in lieu of cashback. If not, either you pay them or the bank pays them; same deal.

Is there a trade involved? If so what is it? Miles, trim options, condition, any repairs needed?

So here's how it went DOWN today....MSRP on the particular vehicle is $32,323.00 plus 5% gst for a total of $33,939.15...so I call the Medicine Hat dealer where I bought my car and he tells me, that the can work with me to get at least $500 over cost (apparantly their COST is 30,235) So I said I would pay $31,000 + 5% = 32,550 plus some sort of $400 dollar "thing" so works to 32,995. So go to the local lethbridge dealer and drive the thing on the sloppiest day we have had this year....Not sure about it as it has a CVT transmission just like sled....So up and down it shifts...Sit down with the salesman on the best cash deal,,,Yadda yadda he can knock off $600, but if I want he could talk to the salesmanager,,,,With my fiancee sitting there I say, "get your *** in there and talk" so about 15 minutes later they both come in and let's call the manager NORM, well that is his real name,,,,He shows me a sheet with all their costs etc, and they come up with a number that is about 1200 higher than Medicine Hat, I tell them this and they say buy it as there is no way .......So I go home and have Medicine Hat email a copy of the invoice with the 31 on it......I take it to Lethbridge dealer, and before I get home they have called and said.,"oooh we made a mistake, we can match that price" So the best CASH price is whatever the Stupid consumer is willing to pay....What is my time worth? Games? Yadda yadda,,,,Oh I forgot to mention, in between all this running around between NISSAN dealerships............WE BOUGHT A VOLKSWAGEN!

haha nice. what did ya buy?

Ok so here is the auto buyers information.

Invoice price is 11% behind the MSRP

Each dealer pays the invoice price for a car but then receives a variable 2 to 4% dealer holdback for each vehicle sale. So how much do you have to play with, well quick math is about 13-15%. Now the import companies have a little different volume programs as well as higher shipping costs.
