Attn Skiers quick question

i tried wearing a helmet when boarding it i swear i messes with my balance. which would lead me to crash more. so i stopped wearing a helmet when boarding.. Only riding powder these days.. rather risk it than have off balance

Crashing down

This thread reminds me of the one on should you tie down your sleds in a inclosed trailer...surprising to see so many people don't, but there is a whole pile of stupied dumped on yah when s#*t happens and the age old question flys...should a could a would a!
I know I left myself wide open for argument here but no ones gonna say dam you were lucky NOT to have them tied down or your only going to need radical reconstructive surgery to your head in this question.

I see it this way fellas when we do stupid stuff and we get hurt you can alway fall back and say but hunny I was wareing my helmet...I just about made it too.

i wear mine, the best thing is, keeps my head all sealed up and i never have to worry about it flying off in a tumble. also keeps the trees from wackin me in the dome.

I suppose you that wear a helmet while skiing also wear one when riding your motorcycle down the freeway?

My ski helmet is warmer than a hat, and stays in place rather than shifting on my head. I have the most marks on it on the back of the head, from people slamming down the leg rest to early. Those reasons alone make them worthwhile to me. And that's not even getting into the safety they provide when I crash.
Every activity pretty much that I participate in gets a helmet. Motorcycles on/off road, snowmobiles, skiing, and bicycle riding(except around the neighborhood). Most sports I played growing up required helmets. Hockey, Lacrosse, Baseball.
There is no way a helmet makes me feel unbalanced. Pretty much every activity I participate in has risks. I would be a idiot to not try and remove those risks if possible.

These are my 2 ski helmets
Smith Varient Brim- Vents awesome on warmer days, but keeps me super warm when cold. Fits very comfy on my head, so I dont even feel it.

Giro Race Helmet- Not very comfy, but legal for racing. I painted it this summer in my garage with spray paint cans.

I only read your OP. i did not read the following posts so if this has been stated already I apologize.

Here it is, now that you are only riding the groomers with kids, this is important. The majority of major head injuries occur on greens and blues. When you are ripping down a double black and dropping into a chute with a manditory air you may wipe out and tumble. You may receive a concussion ( I have too many to count- in fact, I am not suppose to ski at all, docs orders that I do not follow)however, the tumble and high speed can actually prevent the fast stoppage of the brain. now on greens and blues (suppose to be slower skiing in general) you will not tumble as much and the impact is great as the brain tends to slam the cranium easier in the slower impact skiing accidents in general.

Statistics show the majority of head injuries happen on greens and blues. Also, there are way more yahoos on these runs.

Plain and simple wear it and provide for a positive impression. I do feel that ski helmets are mostly insufficient. I am a full face guy. If you wear a ski helmet, be sure to retire it every couple of years or after a big hit.

Seriously, my memory and IQ have dropped significantly. Once upon a time I was slightly intelligent.

My point here is, you are more at risk now that you are ripping groomers.

Be safe and rip it man!

I never used to wear a helmet. Year and a half ago I worked for a Major resort in the ski industry here in Colorado. I worked with ski patrol (not for) and with the ambulance, assisting in patient transfers. Seeing some of the people come off the mountain will give you another perspective.

1. I saw a 14 year old kid come off the mountain, he was violent, crying, lost, not there all at once. He hit his head snowboarding. Long long story short, I saw him two years after his accident and he was not the same. I had talked with his mother several times and she had said they have spent a lot of money trying to make him right again, and she had accepted that he wouldn't be right in the head ever again. This kid had his entire life ahead of him and will probably never be a productive member of society because of his crash and head injury. All because he didn't have a $60+ helmet on.

This was just one example. I saw lots of adults, lots of kids come off the mountain with head injuries. You say you just do groomers but all it takes is one other say 14 year old kid flying down the mountain out of control to collide with you. Your decision to not wear a helmet could mean your family doesn't have one of their bread earners supporting them. Honestly, it's just stupid not to wear a helmet. You buy insurance for your car, have health insurance and probably wear your seatbelt. Do you really plan on crashing your car? You have it there for that "what if" scenario.

Most major ski areas require all staff to wear helmets. I honestly don't think it will be long until they require anyone on the mountain to wear a helmet. Most require a helmet for any ski lesson already.

Thanks for all the replies fellas always good to hear other sides of the coin. Not that i am narrow minded, i just have trouble with being told what to do i.e. wife, etc. I am sure some of you guys know how I feel
