So my wife and I have been in a bit of a disagreement.
Here is what i have. I have been skiing my entire life and have never worn a helmet. the wife wears one and we have agreed that the kids should wear them for now as they are 6 and 7.
I feel that as an adult and a fairly accomplished skier I choose not to wear a helmet due to the fact I am not off the groomers I am skiing with my kids!
her argument is that i wear a helmet when i ride my sled, dirt bikes and any other power sport.

What are some fellow sledders thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance

Personally, I wear my helmet when I ride my snowboard. Always.

Like you, I can ride all day and never hit the ground.... But, why take a chance with a closed head injury? If you are riding with your kids on a groomer, you are probably paying attention to them. What about the person who is totally out of control behind you and plows into you?

I wear a helmet snowboarding, sledding, MX, streetbikes, mountain biking, etc. I have witnessed the after effects of brain trauma and its nothing I ever want to deal with.

Murph

I wear a helmet riding my road bike (bicycle), and I've never crashed (knock on wood).

I've knocked myself f*ckin' goofy when skiing.

Just wear the helmet. At the very least you're not a hypocrite to your kids...didn't you hate growing up to "do as I say, not as I do"? I know I hate it to this day (cause I still have to deal with it daily) and I'm 30!

I used to wear a helmet snowboarding, then hit age 16 and became invincible, so away went the helmet. Now at age 24 I'm still invincible:face-icon-small-coo, but I know that ends the second I crash. I'm in the market for a helmet. Been riding since I was 9, have had concussions, and know people that nearly died not wearing a lid in various activities (3 day coma at age 18 after a board crash-full recovery, another guy a few weeks after a moto wreck & no helmet- mostly full recovery after 3 years, another guy 2 months in hospital and relearning to walk after BMX crash at age 17-long road to full recovery). Ironically that 18 year old that was in the 3 day coma was a regular helmet wearer, but forgot it at home that day and said screw it, I'll ride anyway.

I grew up sking since i was 6 and never wore a helmet and for 20 years I never saw anyone else wear one. It is funny how things progress. I dont think speed has increased and the terrain has changed all that much.. I think it is just the prospective about risk and protection that has and it has produced a million dollar helmet industry.

I think i am with you on not wearing one if you are just on the slope with the kids and let them make the decision when they are older. I think if you start out wearing one it is easier to keep wearing one though.

I remember when it was frawned upon and you were not considered a real racer if you chose to wear a helmet in the Tour de France or any professional bike race but now you see everyone racing wears one. Now that the technology has progressed to a point where they ae comfortable and light, it might not be a bad idea to wear one in certain situations.

I think some people get the idea that the helmet will protect them from anything so people ski above their ability all the time and get into trouble. I can see wearing a helmet if you have both feet tied to a single board because you can be whipped over backwards and get slammed but i feel with a pair of skies you are more able to catch yourself or protect yourself in a fall that i still dont think it is necessary to wear one. Now on icy days skiing trees or the backcountry were you can fall and come in contact with trees or rocks under the snow it might not be a bad idea. I like PJ's idea

" Back in the day..before helmets were around....they culled more of the herd, lookit kids nowadays...( points to great grandchild ),,,,see what I mean!...........PANSY!!!!

It was classic front porch cold beer knowledge.

You may want to set an example for your family and wear one while with them then not when you ski alone. It is your decision. And the Pansy needed stitches but lived with a strip of baldness.

I wear one when skiing for the obvious reasons. I also much prefer it to a beannie for warmth and comfort . Mine has removeable padding thats sure is nice as temps change.

I always thought it was sissy BS till I tried one and found I like it especially when im charging that tree line. It adds that extras bit of confidence and sure is great when I need to lower my head and clear the way.

BTW Dale Earnhart hated the idea of wearing the HANS device that would have likely saved his life. A helmet is pretty simple sacrifice IMO wear one !

Thanks for all the replies fellas it is great to hear some other perspectives on the subject keep em coming

Been skiing pretty much my whole life and never wore a helmet. Two years ago I started wearing one, after my sister-in-law (ski patrol) started bugging me about it. At first I felt like a complete jacka$$ wearing it, but now I don't even think about it anymore. I'll admit that I actually do feel safer in the trees/rocks with it on. Plus, my kids (5 and 3) both ski now, and it would be tough for me to tell them they have to wear helmets if I'm not going to wear one.
I vote wear it.

Just wear it so the ol lady shuts up.

Imagine how much crap she'll give you if you don't wear one & get killed from a head injury!

Thanks fellas I am in the market for one, sure are cheap compared to helmets i am used to shopping for ie shoei arai etc

I would have never married a woman that wore a helmet skiing so in my case this never would have become an issue.
