Argument on ethanol wires...

O.K.... I'm getting mixed answers on if the wires should be plugged or unplugged... from the dealership, friends and other forums (I trust this one the most...that's why i'm asking!!:D) So can someone explain to me, and everybody else who is wondering what the REAL deal is?? I'm pretty sure I ran my Assault all of last season with them plugged in for NON ethanol fuel

That is correct. Wires plugged in for 91 or 92 octane that contains no ethanol. Wires unplugged for 91 or 92 octane that contains not more than 10 percent ethanol.

Ethanol Fuel

I called the fuel supplier here in Alaska and asked about the fuel.. I was told that we do not have ethanol in our fuel here. I had the same delema, one dealership said to unplug and another said to plug it in. Look in the phone book and call a local fuel supplier.. The defalt and safe way is to leave them unplugged, if you are not sure.

Is there a noticable difference in performance if you are using NON ethanol fuel and keeping them unplugged as upposed to having them plugged in??

Read your manual again:

If the snowmobile is operated with non-ethanol fuel be sure to CONNECT the black/blue wires to the pink wire.

The wires should remain UNPLUGGED when operating with fuel containing up to 10% ethanol.

Perhaps this might help,

Here' my understanding of the "ethanol wires", They lean out the mixture 5%, PERIOD! No ethanol detectors, no timing change just a simple 5% change in fuel flow.

This is different than the "premium" switch on the 2001-2004 Edge's which altered ignition timing.

So if the D-8's were carbureted they would have approx a 500 main jet@ sea level (based on the 500 mains used stock in the 2002 800's)

5% leaner takes you to approx 475 mains.(5% times 500=25. 25 deducted from 500=475)

If you think of it in those terms, you're better informed and now make your own assessment/decision at that time.

Just prior to leaning down your sled 5%, as Dirty Harry would say, "Do you feel Lucky?"

I would recommend installing a simple toggle switch in the console, and label it RICH (OFF) / LEAN for ON (wires connected)

Hope this helps

I plugged mine together when I brought it home last season and never touched it, I just don't hold it in the mid range and I have had no problems, ride it like a 2 stroke and you shouldn't have any problems

So you thought that sentence that i misspelled a word in made sense?

I didnt even catch that...but doesnt on used out of context in Oregon always mean no? :>)

Ill use less words : unplugged=ethonol
plugged in=premium 91/92 NO Eth. unless you are from Oregon and then on and no have different meanings!
when in doubt=unplugged

Still trying to fix my Karma for getting it wrong the first time myself.

IT is not mentioned in 08 user manual..only 09 onwards.

does anyone have a picture of the actual wire that need to be used

On the left side engine compartment right above clutches take off the spare belt cover, pull the wiring loom out that is right behind the ECU, the 2 wires are loose (or plugged together depending on your configuration) with clear/blue waterproof boots.
Again because it's confusing: connect wires ONLY with non-ethanol premium of 91 octane or higher. UNPLUG if UNSURE about oxegenation or quality. Unplug for oxygenated fuel.

is it worth it to plug the wires together? is there really THAT much difference? mine currently are unplugged and i dont know if i want to plug them together.......

unplugged richens the fuel by 5%..plugging it in will lean the top end by 5%...ethanol fuel requires more fuel to be the same richness as non ethanol fuel...yes..it should run better plugged in on nonethanol fuel....

well i run only 91 no ethanol at all times.......i guess ill try them plugged in. Any word on blown motors because of leaned conditions with ethanol?

What about adding 99.9% isopropal? only ad a couple ounces

the only thing I add to mine ever..is seafoam fuel cleaner..it works as a water dispersent as well as the best injector cleaner out there...(I add it in the fall for first tank, mid season, and in the spring when the sled gets put away, although I will add some if I suspect any water in the tank during the season)

Unless your sled has had an updated reflash your wires are not activated

After my Dec.08 reflash on my 08 D7 Switch I ran Premium and wires plugged in....now my plugs are a nice cardboard brown versus my thick black and oily plugs pre flash wires unplugged. Only thing when I was running pre flash wires unplugged and premium I had the mid range stumble going from wot letting off and going back wot....I started using regular 87 octane(up to 10% ethenol) and I never felt the stumble again for two seasons. Now with my sled reflashed and running premium with wires plugged in I have a slight stumble in situations described above....although the stumble is less then before it is definately back....I am thinking of running regular again, checking my plugs and seeing if I can kiss that stumble good buy....anyone else experience this?
