Are You Always Prepared???

It was my idea to stay home this last mothers day weekend. I thought it would be fun to do something with the kids and not the usual go to the cabin weekend. So ron suggested a hike that should be snow free by now. We took off Saturday with our two kids (8 and 9) and one of their friends. Hiked up to the Reservoir and it was about dry so we decided to continue on the more strenuous part of the hike to a pretty waterfall. Round trip 4 miles. We started running into snow, run off, and mud. Making the hike a bit slick. By the time we got to the falls I was a little stressed. Slippery rocks and cliff edges. The kind you don't want to have kids anywhere near. So needless to say I didn't want them to stray far. I was a little freaked out with my own steps and my own feet slipping. :face-icon-small-sho We had a snack break, took a few pictures and started heading back down the slick trail.

Here I'am in the rear telling the kids to be careful, watch every step, take your time becuz we can't carry you out of here. Well, guess who falls? yep. ME!!

I slipped going down a rocky steep section of the trail. My feet went out from under me and i put my hands out to catch me and then the hike took a turn for the worse. I felt a quick pain in my right hand, looked over and my right ring finger was bending in the wrong direction. I frantically grabbed my finger in a panic holding it tight. Ron looked back and see's me down and asks if im ok. I said NO, I think I broke my finger. He makes his way back to me and wanted to look at it. I opened my hand holding my injured finger and could see my bone protruding out of my skin. I thought OH CRAP! We had 2 miles to hike out. I felt sick, shaky, shock, legs were turning to into rubber. Then the panic started with what we weren't prepared with. First Aid??? NO!!! All I had we're some bandaids. Ron started helping me hike down the rocks holding my arm while I applyed pressure and held my finger tight. First couple we ran into had no first aid. I was in the state of just wanting to get off the mountain. Then ran into a second couple hiking up, asked them, she had a first aid kit. Panty liner and tape. Life saver!! My finger looked like a compound fracture, I was stressed. It took us 1 1/2 hours to hike down the trail holding my hand above my heart the whole time.:face-icon-small-sad Got to the ER, x-rays and happy to find out I had only dislocated it. wow, what a releif, but nightmare at the same time! nothing broke, just my knuckle bone exposed to the outdoors. They relocated my finger and cleaned up the gash. said they didn't want to stitch it for fear of bacteria in my wound. Since the bone was exposed they wanted to just let it close on it's own. they said i'll have a bigger than normal scar but it was best to do it this way. So I have to change the dressing daily, or Ron does ;). It's not a pretty sight! Sunday was hell. No sleep, the pain set in and the pain pills only made me sick. I'm frustrated but at the same time thankful nothing worse happened and it happened to me and not one of the kids.

Pain is a bit better everyday. Typing with 8 fingers is a little challenging but wanted to share because I never want to go on any hike, simple or not with out being FULLY prepared!!! Are you always prepared? I wish we would have been. The panic feeling may have been less. :face-icon-small-dis

Well my poor throttle hand is OUT for a while. Here are some of our hike pics and some gore to top them off. No worries. We didn't take any on the mountain when it looked really bad. That visual will be in my own nightmares for a while. :(

Ouch! That must have been a nasty fall. Ron is a nice guy, I would have laughed at my wife until I realized she'd gotten hurt....then I'd of felt bad for being a jack azz. Glad it wasn't worse, as in arm, wrist etc. I always have a pretty extensive first aid kit while out snowmobiling, but don't usually pack it hiking......maybe I'll just change that a little. Thanks for taking one for the team so we can all be reminded of the importance.:face-icon-small-win

Sorry to here that! Thats gotta hurt! I think I would freak out if I had a bone poking out of my skin and I am a first responder...
I hope it heals well so you can hit the trails this summer.

Haha Adam. :face-icon-small-hap I wouldn't have been mad if he did, i was in shock from seeing my bone stick out. I don't think I would have noticed the laughter. It was actually one of those falls where you wanted to hurry and get up so no one saw but I couldn't. lol. That was frustrating!

we're usually more prepared than this hiking. we just hadn't made the transition from our sledding packs to our hiking/biking packs.

I think we would have done alright. Later when i emptyed my pack i had two bandanas we could have used to wrap it.

Even being well prepared, there are few people who know how to do a reduction on a dislocation like that in the field. Not to mention, reducing that would HURT like a "Son of a Gun" out in the woods.

Glad you made it out!! Pretty sure the shock would have gotten the best of my wife... Or maybe even me!! Would a small basic first aid kit been of any help to you?

Maybe 5 yrs ago Rockstar, Browntrout, and me went riding wheelers...In classic Rockstar style he wiped it hard on a rocky hill. Got back on the wheeler and rode it down to the trail and was ok right up until he took his shirt off to look if his arm was ok. HUGE gash with bone showing!!! Right then Browntrout said Doug may go into shock and there it was NIGHT NIGHT Doug! I of course freaked out!!! Tried my cell nothing. Eric was calm and cool and calmed me down and said we wouldnt need a chopper!! Doug woke up after just a minute or 2 and ended up riding out on his own wheeler then Eric drove him to ER where he got like 40 stitches and a drain tube so the infection could drain. I honestly don't remember what we had for first aid but the key factor in that incident was Eric being calm and cool!!

I always have a small first aid kit sledden and wheelen and a large one in the trailer, truck, boat, and camper but until now I haven't taken one hiking:)

Also after spending the longest day of my life when my buddy broke his back sledden in WY I always carry some PX strength pain meds in my first aid kit. He laid there for at least 4 hours until duner got back from the truck with some meds and they only started taking the edge off right about the time the life flight landed.

PS I am so glad it was you and not one of the kids. What a nightmare that would have been for everyone involved!!!

All I can say is she's a BAD AZZ for sure. What a trooper:love:

Funny thing is, I think of all the years we pack so much stuff and the one time we really need it, NOTHING!!!!
Our sledding packs are at the cabin loaded with all the goods. We carry pain pills just for occasions like this. That would have been great to take the edge off her pain for the hike out.

Not a very good Mothers Day for her.:face-icon-small-sad

I'm just curious... what is the longest time interval you have gone without having some disabling injury?

You sure seem to fall down a lot... one of these days the ER is going to turn Ron in for suspicion of domest abuse. :-)

Sure a small one would have worked out. I had 5 bandaids that we could have dug out and stuck on and then wrapped the bandana around. but i was so freaked out I didn't want to take off my pack to look, i just wanted to get the heck off the mountain. Luckily the laceration didn't bleed much on the 1 1/2 hour hike out. I held my arm above my heart the hike out. My shoulder got a workout this hike :face-icon-small-hap.

I worried about the kids the whole time. I think that kept my mind off myself somewhat. :face-icon-small-dis When they heard mom was hurt they wanted to see it. I said NO WAY! it totally would have freaked them out.

We thought by looking at it I had a compound fracture. The xray proved differently. Thank god!!! So my finger was dislocated for over 3 hours.

btw. i carry a full blown first aid kit in my car. it didn't even cross my mind to grab stuff out of it to take on the hike. What thaaa???? I guess I was thinking the hike would be a walk in the park kind of hike. ooopppssssieeee :face-icon-small-sad

Hey now...

LOL. First time in the ER for me.

First dislocation and I've never broke a bone.

What ya talking about??? :behindsofa:

Huh?

You've been to my house on crutches... probably more than once.

And I seem to remember some nasty bike get offs over the past couple of years.
