Used to do that to lots of the engines back in the 90s and early 2000s. Most of the later engines made for mountain sleds after that didn't require it anymore. The squish band was very loose on the older Pre-efi motors for detonation control. The later engines had less clearance due to better fuel control and use of detonation sensors. Shaving the head will probably not have good consequences. Aftermarket heads with re-shaped domes do have good performance advantages as they don't have to meet emissions standards and even sending stock heads out for reshaping is another option. I used to shave almost every head I measured for higher altitude use. Haven't had to do it in 20 yrs. Used lots of aftermarket heads and stock ones reshaped in performance builds but shaving to reduce squish alone, not any more.
