Apex vs 800 class sleds - shoot me now

I know it's probably been beat to death already, but.......

In the hands of an experienced mountain rider, how well does an Apex 162 (stock vs stock) hang against the newer 800 class sleds with 153-162 tracks while boondocking and doing some climbing, etc?

I'm coming off a 2004 Cat 1m 900 151 (stock). Would the Apex be a step up?
 
I think it would be pretty even...............................................as long as the guys on the 800's were ridin' double ......................................with Oprah.:D:D
 
When riding in the powder there is no comparison, the 800's will walk all over a stock Apex. I would say the stock Apex would be more comparable to a solid running 600, definitely not a step up.
 
I have a APex mtx and 2 polaris...I love the apex BUT stock it is horrible for mountain riding...I took 96 lbs off of mine,174 track,timbersled ft and rear,simmons gen2,18/42 gears,major clutch work,boss seat ect ect..and with all that done its still not that close to a stock 800 dragon. But the sled it bullitproof reliable (4000mi a year untouched) very very comfortable to ride.
It is also a much harder sled to ride well you really have to think about where u r going before u go there or ur done. Requires a great deal of effort to ride well in the trees. Works really good in deep powder..as there is floats really well with the big track. if the snow is deep I can sidehill it for miles, but if the snow is not deep enough forget it..oh im 6'6" and 275 btw

With all my mods and a huge amount of testing it is a good sled to ride,but if its a "boys" ride ill take my carbon fibre polaris every time

Oh and if u stick it....you will have no friends to ride with...lol

Now if you add some boost, even to 250 hp..great sled to ride..still way to heavy but just plain fun.

Not even close.

FOR SURE!!!! The weight is a big big killer for the yammy! I ride with one every once and a while (stock) and my dad's D7 will walk all over it! Put a 800 in the equation and it will plain not even be fair. When looking at the Yammy the only way to go is to dump a lot of doe into it to lighten, and some boost, then ride where there are no trees!!! Then the shoe is on the other foot.

The best bet if you want a Yammie is to get a Nytro MTX SE put is on a serious diet add a Turbo or an SC and you are ahead of a stock 800 sled, but have also spent enough to buy two sleds, mind you this is from a guy who is riding a sled that also costed enough that I could have two stock sleds and mine will most likely burn down at some point and a Yammie should not.
 
im on a xlt rmk 600 tripple mono block stock and im sorry but it will smoke any stock yami 4-stroke go for a summit 1000 or m1000. or a sled with a water craft motor
 
Yami sleds in general are at the bottom of the food chain stock... but extremely reliable.

The Nytro/Apex will shine once outfitted with a SC/Turbo.. it's almost a necessity after a season's ride.
 
Forgot to add, if you stay on the trail they will rock there. They corner like on rails, because they are heavy like a train!! LOL

Yeah I agree, get ya a 2010 nytro mtx and add the s/c stage 1,very very nice sled to ride. And yes buy the 2010 as its way better than the 09. lighter and rides really nice. Zero lag,good power.
Id wait to see what yammi releases in feb tho...;)
 
Buy a used apex for 6k, add a used BD, Alpine or MCX kit for 2.5-4k, clutching and AFR guage for 500, a decent takeoff Camo Extreme or Powerclaw for 400-500 and you will destroy all stock sleds for a similar or slightly higher investment. You can run pump fuel at low boost, mix at mid or full race for the deep and your sled will likely never let you down and the smile on your face when you double the 800 class sleds in track speeds and power will never go away
 
I have ridden a RX-1 in the mountains for years. Yes, I have lightened it up and it works fairly well but, what people can't seem to get through their heads is boost does not make a sled lighter when in the tight trees or when that thing is trying its best to drag you to the bottom of the canyon because of the high center of gravity. When they are stuck, friends are very hard to find. Guys, just won't make eye contact...............

That's why I now have a 09 M8 and a RX-1M. I still love the sound of my one ton and I have spent so much money making it work fairly well that I can't stand to part with it. Both sleds have their applications.

Ah, a bit of sanity.

I ride with 2 guys with boosted Yammies. They are friggin' impressive to watch go up a hill for sure. Get in to the trees for a couple of hours of boondocking and they are done, wanting to head for the truck.

I think you need 2 sleds... a boosted Yammie and a light weight 2 stroke. Then you can pick which one to take depending on the riding you'll be doing that day.

Have had a 162 Apex....stock, ridden a few high boost Apex's, owned an array of 2-stroke mtn sleds. Stock Apex IMO is a VERY easy to ride boondocker when the snow is deep (but not too deep). In the fresh it handles very easy but will not go nearly as high on a hill as a lighter 2-stroke. Probably even with a long track 600 on a hill. Turbo...another story, in a class by themselves.
I would definatly ride a Apex Mtn for yourself and see if it fits your riding style....GREAT sleds with many advantages :beer;
 
The one I rode seemed decent. At slow speed it showed it's weight but once moving I thought it handled okay and hid the weight well. The damm thing almost ran me over, I never expected how much engine braking they have. In moderate condtions I would say it's close to an 800.

I'm going to assume you are asking an honest question so I will attempt to give you an honest answer.

The key to your question is "experienced" mountain rider. With the understanding that most people on hear consider themselves experienced riders, when in truth most are not your going to get a lot of "INSANITY".

An experienced mountain rider will make any sled look easy to ride including the Apex. An experienced rider will do things with a stock Apex an intermediate rider can't do with a LW 2 stroke (boosted or not) boondocking or hill banging. The responses to your post have more to do with defining who is experienced, and who is not than they do with how these sleds compare stock verses stock.

You see, it's not about the sled, it's about the rider. I consider myself an experienced rider, but I have had my @$$ handed to me more than once by a more experienced rider on a stock Apex. The answer to your question is if your talking about an experienced rider, the Apex will run with any dog in the hunt. Where the problem comes in is riding an Apex when you are really an intermediate rider. The Apex requires more experience to ride to it's potential than a LW sled does. Your inexperience or lack of ability will be magnified on a heavy sled.

I was watching Boost 4 last night. A few of the guys riding in this film would hand 99% of the guys on this forum their @$$'s on stock Apex's or Nytro's. They may not climb the chutes they climb without boost, but as far as riding goes my guess is they could handle any sled better than most can handle a LW sled. (BTW great video again Veedy, I could watch your filming all night long.)

It's the cold hard truth! BTW I'am an unexperienced rider.(have only gone to the mountains twice)
