Apex- cheaper to buy or build?

I'm a Yammie 4 stroke fan because of their dirt bikes and would love to sport a 4 stroke Yammie sled as well. My question is would it be cheaper to buy an Apex and turbo it or buy one already modded? I've never rode a stock Apex (not very far at least- got a couple unstuck last year) so I don't know how they do stock but I know the turbo's go like mad. My instinct says buy stock, ride a few years then turbo. What do the experts say?

Now I do not know for fact, but I am guessing that it would be way cheaper to buy a used built one. Let the other person take the massive hit on depresiation. Seeing how low some of the sleds sell for compared to what they have into them makes it a no brainer based entirely on $.

But if you want everything on it to be exactly what you wanted, and not what someone else wanted, build.

bought an apex last year rode 350 miles stock before installing a boondocker turbo. thought i'd get comfortable on it first.but once you throw boost to it feels 100 pounds lighter.if I had it to do all over i'd turbo it right off the git-go. not an expert but my two cents. also you can probably save some money buying one already set up. good luck.

I'd buy a used Apex without a turbo, ride it a few times without the turbo and then install one yourself so you know how it was done. I had a friend buy a sled built with all the goodies and the engine went down at 1800 miles along with a list of other things due to install problems. Build it yourself so you know how it was done.:)

Spend some time on one before you buy!! I had a Apex (stock) and have spent time on turbo's. Ended up back on a 2-stroke and have no regrets. Just depends on what type of riding you do the most and how much weight you can tolerate. Yes, the turbo is a blast to ride but the weight really shows on technical, off-camber downhill with alot of trees....alot of work to get 800lbs of sled to do anything but go straight down unless the snow is deep and carvable. Just not my type of sled unless they knock at least 100 lbs off it......maybe the Doo4S will be the ticket?

umm, you must be a doo guy, cause the Apex doesn't weigh 800 lbs. Ski-doo and there riders always exxagerate...

Hey I've rode them about 300 yards total and I didn't have any problems! :D
The weight does concern me, especially since I'm such a skinny azz. My Poo 8 will have to do for a while, just got my fingers crossed that the dayum crank doesn't grenade on me.

Put one on a scale with a tank of fuel and the susp packed with snow (like when riding).....my Mtn Apex was 620 with no fuel and no snow.

#3 so true i see so many with these set ups that do exactly what your saying. For them it;s what you have and could do if you had the balls. Not that they will. Hey it's there money.

No i'm on a 1200 wc now and love it dearly. Instant throttle responce great torque and handles like a dream. No it'not the most power out there but it is a sweet ride.

I just checked in Snowest's Deep Powder Shootout 08, the Apex Mountain is 738 with snow in the suspension and fuel in the tank. The big difference I have found in riding the four stroke sleds is the lack of a powerband. A turbo definetely makes up for the lack of powerband when riding these sleds, but without a turbo they feel a lot heavier because of their constant (and not rapidly peaking) torque.

Ya, that's what I use to think. Then one day I started mouth'en off to a couple Apex turbo boys who were just sitting at the bottom of the hill watching the show........ Found out real fast they were just taken a break and did'nt want to steal the show while they watch us 2 strokers on the bunny hill. After I openned my big mouth it became an Apex turbo show real fast. Now I own one and I do spend a fair amount of time sitting around watching guys play on hills that just are'nt fun any more. Unfortunately they will never really know what their missing cause they can't watch the Apex turbos play cause they can't get to the play ground.

You can find used Apexes already built and 100 pds lighter then stock for about 1/2 the money it takes to build them. It's not like buying a built 2 stroke. These sleds are built and ready to ride. My guess is by about December the price will start climbing on them cause I think were going to find out the Nytro just won't stay together under boost for more then about 1000 miles. I saw more motors go bad on Nytro's last years alone then I have Apexes and RX1's combined over the passed six years. I truely do hope I'm wrong about this thought.

How much boost were these guys running that were blowing motors?

Maybe not 800 but its real dam heavy in the hard pack or when its laying on top of me. Kinda like a real big chick with a bad attitude

It will always be cheaper to build than buy, since when you build, your time is worth nothing but when you sell, everyone always tries to recover some of their time in cost. If you build it, you will have to do the development, where as if you buy, its done for you. Your instinct is correct, only I would buy a used stocker, not a new one, then you reduce the total cost by factoring in the depreciation as well.

If my memory serves me right all the motors I saw come apart were running between 18 to 24 pds. All of them put pistons through the block. I have not seen one after complete tear down, but it appeared to be crank or rod problems.

The common denominators were all mid mounts, all above 18 pds boost, and all with more then 900 miles but less then 1500.

Am I the only one who saw this???? Did anyone else see Nytro's put pistons through the block????

I have always heard that over 18 carrilo Hbeam rods are pretty much a must, depending on timing, fuel, and compression also.
