Anyone stabbed Rails thru the Power Claw?

I have 170 km on a 09 M-1000 and was pretty happy with it till last night. I was jumping a snow drift and the next thing I know I woke up under the sled. The skid rails pushed thru the track windows and locked up right at the top of the snow drift and I flew over the handle bars then the nose of the sled dug in and endoed and the rear bumper landed on my head. lucky it hit my helmet and not my neck or back. My helmet has a big scratch in it and the moulding around the bottom is cracked.

Has anyone had this happen to them? I hope the dealer will cover this on warrenty. If you need a anti stab kit to prevent this shouldn't Arctic Cat sell the sled with them already installed?
 
A simple $40.00 anti-stab kit will fix the problem. Usually it only happens when you upgrade the track to something other than the stock track. I stabbed with a Camoplast Challenger Extreme 162x16x2.5.... it threw me over the handlebars and halfway up the hill. Very violent crash when moving fast.

When you jump over a road and gun it the track creates a little wave in the front between the bottom of the rail bend (below the front tips) and the drivers. Sometime this wave is so extreme that you can stab through a window. In my case I gunned it climbing a hill and a small tree sticking maybe 4 inches out of the ground altered the track just enough to catch a rail tip. I had to pull the entire suspension out and cut sections of my track out, and remove all the bogey wheels on the stabbed side so I could ride it out. I was missing about a 8 inch section of my track.

A $40 part saves a $750 track. Good insurance.
 
now that is the most disturbiing equipement failure i jave ever heard! I had just decided on a M series over XP but now will hold off!

Much cheaper and easier to add an anti stab kit to fix this problem then it is to get the clutching right on the doos so you aren't burning up $200 belts. They all have their problems out of the crate. The cat is an easy fix compared to many. This coming from a Poo guy. Those 2010 cats are pretty sweet rides. I would take one over an xp any day.
 
I'm not happy with what happened with my M-1000 but I would never go back to the xp after the last 3 years of constant breakdowns. The Cat engines have way more power and reliability then the Skidoo or the Polaris. I still consider my self a polaris guy but am just waiting for them to build a sled that is as reliable as the Edge sleds were. Stabbing the track just seems like a easy problem to fix if AC would just make the rails a little bit longer. I am definitley buying a anti stab kit now. Shouldn't have too.

I 'm not sure how tight my track was it was the 3rd time I rode it since new. I know it wasn't ratcheting and I aways in the past used that as a guidline of when to tighten my track.

Had a buddy break a tip off the rail and didn't notice until back on the trailer. It was there at the beginning of the ride and not at the end. Lucky he didn't catch he track.
 
I know of a $0 fix. Pay some attention to your track tension and adjust it to spec. When it's brand new, even one short ride will stretch it.

It's funny how this most commonly happens on a sled that's almost brand new. It's because the owner never thinks to check the track tension after the brand new track stretches, and then it's a ticking time bomb. This shouldn't be warrantied, IMHO.

I know of a $0 fix. Pay some attention to your track tension and adjust it to spec. When it's brand new, even one short ride will stretch it.

thats about the dumbest thing i've heard on here. are you supposed to stop every hour and check your track?? if the rails were just a little longer or they were tipped up a little more nobody would have this problem. new sled broken= warranty issue. pay 10k for a sled and not have that warrantied???

the antistab kit is the best thing for the money.

High Performance Engineering has them in the 40$ range. but they only have two inside wheels. the bdx one is nice because it has 4 wheels, a worthwhile upgrade in my mind.

Well it's pretty much guaranteed that after each of the first 4 or 5 rides on a new track, you'll need to tighten it up a turn or two on each side. That's not once every hour, or even once every ride. Just when the track is being stretched as it's being worn in. Get it?

I agree that changing the rail design could be a better solution, but unfortunately it is the way it is. IMO I'd rather spend my money on things other than antistab kits, when proper track tension will do nearly the same thing.

EDIT: Just sharing my experience, as someone who has owned multiple new cats and is a close relative and friend of a dealer and cat mechanic. Take it as you will.

I never tighten my tracks till they skip..ever..
 
well it sounds like some are lucky that equipment failure did not result in a hospital stay. sounds dangerous and if is a design problem AC needs to fix it.

First of all, the recommended tension is too tight. If you like keeping your track tight and creating tension, that's fine with me. The whole idea of having extrovert drivers is that you can run the track loose. Apparently Cat can't figure that out.

If you run a track so loose on extrovert drivers that it ratchets you may want to re-think your guidelines, but seriously, Cat should be distributing anti-stab kits to M series owners free of charge.

stabed mine in January. The dealer would not warranty it. cost me 630$ with shipping. I don't run it as tight as the book says. But I sure as heck run it tighter than I used to. (09 m1000 162)
