You can drill out the rivet and just replace with a lynch pin or snap over pin so you could take the handle apart from the shovel.

A grain scoop would be a little large to get into the back pack for me. Probably works well though.

Put a hose clamp on it to hold the aluminum handle I made, so it breaks down, you could put it in a backpack, it's cut down a bit from a normal grain scoop. cost $17 if I remember right, very sturdy.
