Anyone modded a 155 to a 144?

I was thinking about changing my 155 08 700 which has ran flawless to a 144. i ride in sask and cant see my self going to the mountains more than once a year maybe twice. if i could trade my 155 for a 144 skid and possibly sell the track and get a 1.75 back country track then i would have to chop the rear section and weld it back together. i was thinking so because like i said before i love my 700 and i really like the white hood and decals............

the other option would be to get a 09 144 800 shift then would need a PC5 and a wrap..........and cut the 144 to 1.75 lugs.

my 155 has the tips cut off so its 2.1" and takes off way better on hard pack.

even easier would be a guy with a 144 rmk wanting a 155 and we trade tracks and skids then i would just need to cut and weld. i was hoping to fine a used PC3 and get the 700 stock map.....

what would do you think?

If I were you I would sell/swap the tunnel and go that route, or perhaps you might find someone who wants the 155 chassis and you could swap, be a couple days work, but I would never cut and weld the cooling extrusion, re-sale would go out the window, unless you can make it look factory.

yah it would have to look factory for sure, if you look under there where they welded its not exactly the nicest welding either im sure some nice tig welding would look alot better.

i guess its just alot easier to find a 144 rmk shift 800 and put a wrap and pc5 on it.

i did exactly what you are talking about doing with an 07 rmk. i just took the whole chassis to my local welding shop and had them cut 4.5'' out of the tunnel and coolant system. worked great. no issues, very clean looking. of course you can see then weld but that really wasn't an issue for me. the shop had/has done lots of work for me before and since so i knew their work was solid and wasn't worried about them screwing it up. if i were you this is the way i would go (obviously) and it would definitely be the cheapest and easiest. swapping tunnels is a major project. good luck

Not really that big of a deal to shorten if you have a good welder around you.

Drain the coolant...

Remove the bumper (#5) and drill out the rivets of the end cap (#11)

Mark and cut the tunnel with a fine tooth carbide skill saw (this will make a lot of shavings mess.

Duplicate the holes in the top of the cooler/tunnel from the piece you've cut off to allow for the welding like factory.

De burr the entire cut

Remove the front hoses from the coolers (pull the fuel tank) ... Run water from a garden hose thru both sides of the coolers to flush out any shavings.

copy the cross tube of the now loose original end treatment or cut it off carefully with a band saw

Weld the ends of the cooler closed.

Weld in the new cross tube.

Trim the rear of the tunnel sides for a clean look and instal l the bumper OR ... better yet, run the SPG or COBE rear bumper for a clean look.

If you have a good person welding this with a Tig... the tunnel will look better than stock

IMO...will not alter the value of the sled other thant he difference in value of the long track compared to the shorter version.

I'm going to shorten my 163" D-7 in just this way this spring to a 144 and run the Camoplast Challenger Extreme 2.5" with the 7 tooth 3" Pitch drivers on there.

Yeah. Are you still looking at trying to swap to a 144 or have your plans changed to buying a new sled?

i dont know yet, im on the fence if i would do so it wouldnt be till summer if i was to do it. i think its just the lack of snow getting to me

Yeah I wouldn't want to attempt this till the off season, So if this is still an option for you let me know.

I probably would have bought an RMK 700 144" if it was available! I sno-checked my 800. At the time there wasn't even a 700 available. Polaris should really build the 700 in a couple of lengths. Everyone seems to love that engine. I hope my 800 keeps working well, because the 200 miles I did ride it, I love it!
