Anyone ever re-name a dog?

We just adopted a 3 y.o. Golden Retriever "Patron" Not crazy about the name and we can't seem to think of any thing that really rhymes with it.

Any ideas out there?

We got a 8 year old lab from a gal that was moving in with a guy (arsehole) who didn't want a dog. Great dog but his name was Sam and we had another lab who's name was Sam. We decided that we would call him Jack (long story) and he picked right up on it. Two weeks later when I'd call Sam Jack wouldn't even look. Call Patron by his new name when giving treats, going for a ride in the rig and other fun things and I think you'll find it's no problem.

Just pick a name and start using it. I have adopted a few dogs and the lil Pug we have now I found out in the middle of nowhere. I am sure he had a different name but we just started calling him "Buddy" and that his name now that he knows. Takes a while and just keep saying it everytime time your showing the Golden attention. It will start to get the picture. The biggest thing is to NOT ever call it "Patron" again if your going to change its name or it will get confused.

I know that you can kill two birds with one stone......my wife brought home a cat. we discussed this before hand and I agreed that she could have a cat if I could name it. our new cats name is GET OUTTA THE WAY!!!!. I tought him that this is his name and tought him sign language (which is wierd, cause I don't really know sign language, but I winged it) I holler his name and "nudge" him with my boot. now when I call my cat it gets out of my way with out me even having to tell it too.

yes you can rename a dog. especially a lab, they just want attention. you could call your dog the devil, if you said it in a nice voice he will catch on.

Funny you say this.... We ust adopted a 6 month old Mastiff/ Shepherd cross. He was a stray, so they didn't know his name. They were temporarily calling him "Moose". I wasn't crazy about it, and decided to call him "Charile"... We got him Friday, and he already knows it's his name. We ust started saying it everytime we spent any time with him. They pick up real quick.... Good luck with your new pup!

Took a 9 month old lab from a family that couldn't keep him.
His name was "midnight"

Started calling him Bud or Buddy.

2 years later it has finally stuck

Moonman- he looks like a Fozzie

Kid is out doing chores as his mother watches from the kitchen window while doing dishes
Kid can't get the cow in the barn to milk it so he kicks it and beats it with a stick trying to get it to move.
Mom yells out the window " You don't beat that cow, no milk for you for a month"
Kid is really mad as he walks into the chicken coupe, kicks the chickens out of the way, collects the eggs and as he walks to the house starts whipping them, breaking them as they hit the ground.
Mom Yells out the window "You don't treat chickens like that or break all those eggs, No eggs for you for breakfast for a month"
Dad comes home from work, trips on the cat in the doorway, cusses and swears as he kicks the cat...
Kid looks at his dad and says "Watch out for mom, she won't let you have any pu$$y for a month !"

They'll pick up on a name pretty quick. We always name our pets something, but then wind up using...eh-hem... pet names for them. Our latest dog Mandy...She's mostly black with a white spot...so I started calling her Mandy Moo (like a Holstein cow)- well I typically only call her Moo now and she gets it.

I call them "ya' s-h-e-e-t head" when they whizz on the carpet
" You dum-f-a-w-king s-h-e-e-t head" when they take a growler on the carpet. :(
Carpet in house is white.
My Schnauzer tattles on our Boxer all the time by taking me to the newly formed discoloration

My wife got a little dog...a jackapoo. It's the most deviant non-learning dog I've ever....seen...ever.
She's smart but uses it for evil and not good.
Anyway I've called her chet head and little chet for so long now she responds.
My wife loves it.

Used to have a dog named Cisco. I usually caled it "You Stupid Little S.O.B." It knew who I was talking too. So to answer your question.....yes I have changed a dog's name.:D

you will have no issues at all, it's actually sometines good for the dog to get a new name, helps with the adjustment to the new home. I have always changed dogs names when I got them, always turned out Ok, best of luck

My dog responds to "Duke", "Fuzzball", "Little scht", "Damnit", and "Rat Bastard".

Only one of those is on his tags though....

Our Springer has a handfull of nicknames.
She responds to all of them.
I think the tone is just as crucial as the name itself.

Believe it or not, one of her nicknames is "Jism"!:D
