Anyone else going nuts in southwest CO?

I would like to take you up on the offer, cause those sleds were new the last time I was there on a sled. That was two sleds ago for me. My Dad was the only one that would go up there, and now he isnt sledding anymore.

Have you guys ridden up Middle Fork or East Fork above silver jack? I have always wanted to just havent got to it yet.

Both the Middle Fork and East Fork go into wilderness. Some riding but better elsewhere.

Nice shots of California gulch. A TAPEX with 174" track makes pretty short work of it though. :face-icon-small-hap:face-icon-small-win

There is a very good reason I don't ride a T Apex, or any turbo. I have great respect for these mtns. The snowpack is almost never safe and my wife has strict rules about coming home alive.

I'd love to watch though...

Agreed on Middle and East forks, not much there.

We usually go in to California by driving up to Eureka through Silverton. If it is later spring the county usually plows up to Animas Forks by mid April and you can drive right up. You can do it from Red Mtn but the ski area HATES us, and the road is posted illegal to ride. Shorter drive but way more hassle. I have gone up Engineer Pass Rd but that is seriously sketchy for more than I liked riding. If you lose it into the canyon, it will be your last act.

We will probably do a couple Sunday trips in the spring snow permitting.

The other fun ride is right up the front of Whitehouse Mtn in front of Ridgway. Gotta hit that one a time or two more soon in case the wackos are successful in getting it into a wilderness expansion. Requires a better snow year than most because the drainage we use for access is challenging to say the least. Pretty sweet sitting up on the side of that one though.

I will keep you posted.

Yep, the areas in the Butte and San Juans can be DEADLY!!!! One reason my TAPEX has seen little seat time as of late. Pretty hard to find climbs that are challenging and yet safe. Get the snow deep enough and it becomes dangerous. Time to head to the trees.:face-icon-small-hap:face-icon-small-win

I tried a lot of sleds before buying a lightweight stocker. Anything with a turbo is overkill for my needs. We save the climbs for set up spring hero snow and the stocker goes stupid places already. I rode a T-Apex on Red Mtn once years ago. FREAKING SICK was what was. Where my sled powered out, it picked up the ski's. I just find myself boondocking through the trees and creekbeds more than anything these days.

I guess this thread can now die, besides the snow falling now it looks like a MAJOR storm will focus on SOCO next weekend, starting Thursday lasting to Sunday or so. Right now its looking like 3-5 inches of water for the wolf creek area out of this next weekend storm. Again this is a separate event to what is happening this weekend. One thing is for sure the storms are not very consistent for SOCO but when they hit holy mackerel do they hit hard. Enjoy!

Just a heads up, the banks on the trail today were bustin loose!! Little baby avys but a good warning about the conditions.everyone be careful!!
