Anybody had their enclosed trailer blown over by the wind?

Last weekend, driving about 45mph up the Chief Joseph Hwy the wind decided to knock my 27' enclosed trailer on it's side and off the back of my truck. Anybody else have this happen? I've been pulling a enclosed trailer up that road almost every weekend in the winter since '96 and never had anything like that happen.

Snapped on chain link and the other chain came off. Luckily it separated from the truck because the guy up the road had his trailer blow over but it looked like his front fender got whacked and his front tire was flat.

The sleds came out surprisingly well. My Nytro was still tied down and had just slid over. My buddies Summit next to my Nytro was tied in the front but the rear slid over into my Nytro because the D ring pulled out that was shared with the front of the M8000. The brand new, never been ridden M8000 flipped on its side and slid into the opposite wall when the D ring let go. It has a bent handlebar and some scrapes and scuffs.

Lesson to be learned, never share a D ring with multiple sleds! Next trailer will get multiple D rings

Trailer I figure will be a total so I'm now in the market for another.

Actually I was wishing I had a trailer full of apexes! We bought 1000lbs of quickcrete in Cody so we could get the trailer out of there without blowing over again. Luckily a guy came by with a winch and pulled it onto its wheels

One other time I've heard of this happening. It was also with a deck over axle style trailer. Coincidence? Maybe but IMO the "race car" style trailers pull straighter and don't wag around as much. Also IMO a V-nose tends to get tossed around more in a cross wind as well.

I was coming down the same road in 2012 after thanksgiving trailer did not go over but was on two wheels for a while. Wind was realy blowing. I was ready for it when we changed directions and had slowed to under 30 mph or it would have been on its side also.

I had a new 7x14 blow over about 15 minutes after I bought it new. snapped the chains off and went flying into the ditch.

Did it to mine(Rance aluminum 8.5x 26 7ft tall). Picked it up in Indiana back to Cali. Coming across empty blew over(at a slant) on the v-nose corner and one front wheel, ground a little bit of aluminum off. Stayed hooked up also. Funny thing is reached up a pulled it back onto its wheels

On the same stretch of road last year we honestly thought that was going to happen to us. The cross winds on that straight stretch of hwy can be unreal. Glad everyone was OK.

Not to be a downer but.
When I see that pic I think a poorly loaded trailer(not enough tongue weight) and forgot to latch the hitch or wrong size ball.
Either that or ur ball broke or the latch on the trailer broke. I have never seen a properly latched hitch just come off without something breaking. Also if u have the proper amount of tongue weight it takes some huge bumps (or wind)to pop the hitch off the ball even without being latched
You didn't mention hitch breaking that's why I assume it wasn't latched.

I have seen three trailers blown over before. One was a deck over two place with two apexes in it. It went over so hard it flattened the pickups leeward side trailer and left a groove in the asphalt from the wheel, it also broke both safety chains and the hitch came off the ball. The trailer was hooked up correctly but with the torque that is applied to the ball at an angle they are not designed for, lot will pull it right off the ball. The other two I saw were near Livingston mt one two place turtle shell and a 4 place deck over, and both of those were pulled off the ball as well. I think most times it will come off the ball because of te leverage and the inability of the hitch to turn 90* freely. Glad everyone was ok and only minor damage to sled. Did you have insurance and if so what are they gonna cover

Really? Guy has been pulling trailer on this route for going on 20 yrs he said. Sleds tied down. Pretty sure it wasn't operator error.
Besides best possible thing is that it parted ways with the truck or there would be more insurance claims.
But wow though. I've had mine blown side ways skidding from the wind on snow packed roads. Drag the @sss end of the truck a little with it but just flipped over?
That's some bad luck there. Sorry to hear about it. Glad everyone is ok and relatively minimal damage all things considered.

Be glad it came off the truck, I know a guy who had it happen to him but it took the truck with it into the ditch. Truck and trailer were written off and the guys got banged up pretty good. I was following a guy pulling a huge triple axle Raptor and it started to go, cross wind was about 60 mph, he got it slowed down and saved it. We have a stretch of road we travel that flips semis all the time so I'm not sure any more weight is gonna help you, all you can do is slow down and hang on.

I cannot find the actual video but it shows the trailer getting blown over. I asked my trailer dealer after that and he told me that if a trailer goes over like that it's designed to break away from the ball(maybe he is crazy) If I remember correctly the trailer was empty in the video. I had my charmac empty in this windstorm and I never thought my trailer was going over. It was more blowing me everywhere.

The tri-sport trailers are built different at least my charmac is. It's aluminum , but the back door is built heavier for loading a vehicle. The wheels are further back, and the actual aluminum channel and beam in the floor are heavier to handle more weight, with 7,000lb axles. My understanding at least from charmac the tri sport is heavier then there "snowmobile" higher setting trailers. I knew this going in, and sure have been in love with it. It plus nice, it's easier in and out, they are just nice freaking trailers

Sorry to hear about your experience and with as much as you have towed a trailer I am sure you were comfortable with what was going on until it went over. No matter what it sucks, we can coulda shoulda woulda ourselves to death.
