Anybody going down to a 15" track?

In the interest of lightweight(and handling?), has anybody gone back to a 15" wide track under a REV or XP? If you did, give me your input. I've noticed that some of the Turbo Yammie long track boys have dropped down to 15's from 16's, in the pursuit of better handling and lighter weight. I'm looking at putting a 156x15x2.5 Camo Extreme under my '08 XP. The 15" is 3 lbs lighter than the 16" track. I know it's "only" three lbs, but 3 lbs. is 3 lbs.

I switched from a 136x1.25x16 to a 136x2x15, mostly because i desperately needed the traction.

I really didnt notice anything in the trails, i could throw it around just as easily, but 10x better hookup in the loose stuff with the new track.

Im sure if you compared a 15x1.25 and a 16x1.25 you would probably notice a difference in hookup too. the 16x136 is supposed to have as much track on the ground as a 15x144...

I bought the new Cat power claw track for my XP. Hoping it is as good as everyone says it is.

If you look at the clearance, or lack thereof, for the 16 you can see where the track could, and does pack snow. The snow that packs up and rubs the track can't be helping. It might do the same thing with a 15, but a little more room for the snow to move freely couldn't hurt. D/R, drop brackets, etc. all done to create "space" for the snow to evacuate. Why not more space on the sides of the tunnel/track, up front, where alot of drag takes place from the tight fit of the 16 wide. Maybe i'm overthinking it:D

In the slp catalog they claim losing one pound of rotating mass is the same as loseing seven pounds of stationery mass??? Dino

The space could fill up with 3 pounds of snow hahaha

Some guy on here said he bought a 16 inch wide track but the lugs only went 15 inches with 1/2 inch on each side with nothing? I thought about this and the fact that you would get the floatation of a 16 and the handling of a 15? Any thoughts on this or on cutting the outer 1/2 inch of each lug off?

When I owned my 02 I swapped out the 15" track for the 16" track and I noticed much less snow packed inside the tunnel. This became especially apparent after the ice melted off of the sled inside the trailer. It seems to be a double edged sword. The extra 1/2" of side clearance of a 15" track can help snow exit the tunnel but it also allows for more snow to stick to the tunnel. Obviously, weight becomes of factor if there is ice/snow buildup. The 16" track "cleans" the inside edges of the tunnel and prevents ice buildup. I imagine there is also the question of how much drag is created at the drivers with a 16" track since the snow is forcred over the top of the track rather than having room to exit the sides. With that said, I never looked back after changing to the 16" challenger. It made a big difference.

Well it's too late now! I just picked up a Camo 156x15x2.5 Saturday. I'll let ya know how the "experiment" goes. A little less weight, skinny track, better sidehill and climbing?????:rolleyes::)

You're making so many changes this year it might be hard to decipher if the 15" was a help/hurt. With more power, more track speed, bigger paddles (and stiffer), you might not be on a bad course. However, more power and more track speed on a 16" track might be even better....not sure. Felker swears the difference from 15 to 16 is monumental......I won't argue with him, he scares me. LMAO

Seriously, I think with the extra power you'll have and the extra paddle, you're gonna love that sled and track. The ignorance of the CE 16" will be bliss for you. The true test would be to swap to a 16 wide track half way through the year....nah, too much work!!!

:D

I went from a 151 X 16" to a 159 X 15" last year and while the 159 helped keep the front end down big time I really didn't notice much by way of better handling, which is what I was aiming for. With the 9" big wheel kit I had approx the same sq inch of track on the ground with the 159 as with the 151.

Trinity can you keep us posted on this. I am very interested to see how the XP will respond to a 15 wide.
